When We Hurt

This day did not go the way I had planned. I am currently sitting in the emergency room with my eleven year old son.  I am watching him writhe in extreme pain.  It started this morning, when Kaleb told me his stomach hurt. He didn't seem too burdened by it, so I sent him to school.

Then, I had grand plans for how the day was going to go. I would check Facebook, catch up on The Voice, and spend several hours writing for all my screaming fans!

As human plans typically go, my day did anything but go according to plans!

Sobriety - Six months

Six entire months.

We made it.

All because of God.

For the first time in 13 years, Kris and I are living in a freedom that we have never known before.

And it is absolutely amazing!!

Six months ago today I chose to go home and fight for my marriage.

And I can stand (sit) here now and proclaim that it was the best decision I have EVER made.  I am more in love with my husband now that I ever thought possible.  I love that pornography no longer has any power in his life.  I love that I am no longer dependent upon anyone but God to satisfy my needs, physical and emotional.

No one but God, THE God, can perform the miracle that has taken place in our marriage.

We were as broken as broken gets.

We were lost, hurting, broken people.

Our marriage was more like a bloodied battlefield after a war, the stench of death everywhere.

It was then, in the midst of that deep, dark place that God rescued us.

I wake up every day incredibly grateful and filled with this inexplicable joy that can only come from God.

THIS is living.

This is true life.

This is drinking from the living water that only God can offer.

I'm ALIVE!

And it is so much better than I could have ever imagined.

There are, of course, two songs that have been really significant in this past week leading up for this six month anniversary of sexual sobriety.  The first one was played at church this morning (our request), after Kris and I stood up in front of our church family and gave just a brief testimony of everything that we have been through and what God has done.  I imagine that given an opportuntiy, Kris and I could fill at least an hour or two sharing the hurts, the healing and the power of God, as He redeemed us from captivity.  If you are interested in hearing the testimony we gave this morning, I believe it was recorded-so I am told.  Once I find out if it is online, I'll let you know (if you've told me you want to hear it), so that you can hear Kris and I talk about what God has done in our lives and our marriage.

But anyway, here is my favorite song right now, that speaks about this redemption from sin and shame and guilt.  It couldn't be more perfect for where we were, where we are right now, and where God is leading us.  It is called "Redeemed" by Big Daddy Weave.  Please listen to this song. God doesn't want to just redeem Kris and me.  If you are unsure of your relationship with God, or you are afraid His love can't extend to you, believe me when I tell you that it can.  It does.  God loves you more than you will ever be able to fully grasp and I just want to stand on a mountaintop and proclaim that for all the world to hear.  But, since I hate hiking, I'll just "shout" from this blog.

The second song is also a newer one, to me anyway.  I have no idea when it came out but I absolutely love it.  It is my prayer.  It is how I feel each day.  It encompasses what God has done in my heart.  It is also a very powerful song.

There is something else I wanted to share with you tonight before I sign off.

I took my wedding rings off the night I left home, just over six months ago.  Because I had NOT removed them at all while involved in a life of sin over the last seven years, I cannot wear them.  When I see them, I am disgusted.  I can't look at my engagement ring and wedding band without feeling sick to my stomach.

Instead of a pleasant reminder of my wedding day, they haunt me.

They became a part of my old life.

The old Jamie.

They have no place in this new life I am living.

Because of that, I was not wearing any ring on my finger for a while.  Kris finally gave me his because it didn't fit him anyway and he wanted me to have something on my 'ring finger'.  So I wore his and we would (presumably) wait patiently for the day that he could buy me a new 'engagement' ring and we could exchange new wedding bands when we renew our vows (likely in 2014-hopefully!!)

However, it bothered me that Kris didn't have a ring to wear anymore.  For the last couple of months I've been trying to think of a way to save money to buy him an inexpensive band that can take the place of the band I will eventually buy for him.  Since I'm horrible at saving money, especially when there isn't a lot to spare, I thought I'd just have to wait.

Until yesterday, that is.

I took my jewelry and headbands that I make (Little Bishop Creations) to Jesus Fest in Granite City, IL yesterday.  While there, I was next to another vendor who sold specialty jewelry.  Dog tags.  Guitar picks on a chain, to wear as a necklace, etc...  I suddenly had a thought (about 5 hours into the day!) "Wait.  What if I can find a ring for him over there?"

And of course, you guessed it...I did.  And for $20, I couldn't pass it up.  I was SO excited about this ring!  I can't wait to show it to you.  It was really perfect for him.  For us.  And wouldn't you know it...I would find one for me (also just $20) that matches his.  So now, we both have replacement rings and I am wearing his wedding ring on my right hand now.  You may not fully understand the significance behind these new rings, but Kris and I do, so that is all that matters.

Faith, Hope, and Love.  Those are the words written on my ring. And I just love that HOPE is the word in the center. Because that is what I had lost for so long.  And I am so full of hope now!
Isn't this cool?  It has the Hebrew on the outside (you read Hebrew right to left in case you wanted a little tidbit of knowledge there...) and then the inside says "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine."  Since Kris has such a great love for Biblical languages, the fact that this ring was even there, and that furthermore it had THAT verse on it...well...if you know us and our story, you can see why it was the perfect ring!

For all the "haters"

I was planning to write a nice, lovely post about our day at the St. Louis Zoo, seeing brand new Sea Lion Exhibit.  I was even going to show you some great pictures from our day.

But something else occurred today.

And you know, I just HAD to write about it.  My friend made this picture and posted it on my Facebook wall Tuesday, and it really is perfect for this post and my decision to blog about today's upcoming topic.  I asked-she doesn't mind that I share this here.  She owns this picture.  It does not belong to me (or you) so don't steal it without asking permission first, OK?

Perfect, right?

Let's begin.

Over the last two days, I have received SEVERAL anonymous comments on my book review for 50 Shades of Grey, a book that I did not (and will not) read; because I choose to keep my mind pure and free from temptation.  I think that some people did not understand my true intent of that blog post, or I wouldn't be getting some of the comments I am getting.  The majority of my friends and family know me, and if you've been reading, you know what has been going on in my life over these last few months.
You also know that pornography is a very sensitive topic for me.  My life has been altered and affected very deeply by pornography.  Beyond that, it is my belief that pornography is wrong.  This is MY belief.  You can choose to believe however you want, and argue with me as much as you want.  It won't change what I believe, and I have little doubt that I am not going to change the majority worldview on the topic.  Please reread that.  This is MY belief.  This is my husband's belief.  Our belief is based off of the Bible.  You cannot look at pornography without lusting.

*Disclaimer*
All quotes from comments I received are as I received them.  I just wanted to clarify that, as some of them may or may not be grammatically correct, or may have some misspelled/abbreviated words.  That's why they are in QUOTES. ;-)

I recently received this anonymous comment on my post "50 Shades of Trash":

"I know your prob gonna delete my comment cause im against to what you said. I do beleive in god and jesus. But this book has nothing to do with satan."

My first thought, and response was this:

"I'm not going to delete a comment just because someone disagrees with me. I did not directly say that this book has anything to do with Satan. To my Christian friends, I called it soft core pornography, which I believe is wrong. Some people, Christians included have their own reasons for why pornography is acceptable. My marriage was almost destroyed because of pornography and the hold it had in my husband's life, and Satan had his grips in me. Satan I believe USES things like books of this type to lure people away-entice them little by little, leaving them wanting more. I don't believe I ever stated that this book had something to do with Satan. Satan was mentioned in terms of pornography and the hold it can have in people's lives, and THAT is where I believe that Satan is very active."

Staying with that same thought, since I essentially said that pornography can destroy marriages, I received another anonymous comment that said this:

"Porn doesnt mess up marriages...people mess up marriages"

I agree, with the "people mess up marriages" part.  We are all fallen people and we all make mistakes.  We don't know how to communicate, or someone has an addiction, or we can't get along for whatever reason we may have.

People DO mess up marriages.  We get in our own way sometimes.

At the same time though, pornography DOES mess up marriages.

Yes, I am speaking from personal experience, but I also know of several others who have gone through this same thing.    And you can read story after story of other marriages, long or short relationships, that have been impacted negatively by pornography.  If you are currently married and you and your spouse mutually "enjoy" pornography, that's between the two of you and it's your marriage.  What I am saying is that the shift and the effect is so subtle sometimes that you don't even see it.  If you both agree that it is OK to read and/or view pornography, maybe it won't impact your marriage.  I did not ever say that pornography messes up EVERY single marriage.  If you and your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever have no qualms about sharing that with one another, you are free to do whatever you want.  This blog is MY blog, MY opinion.

And because it is my opinion and my blog, I'll go one step further to say that if you are a woman and you and your husband indulge in pornography, I would be quite shocked (and you might be too) if your husband or boyfriend isn't ALSO indulging in pornography on the side, WITHOUT you.  With pornography, there is ALWAYS a desire to see more.  Maybe it started out as just the two of you, but at some point it has (or will) become something secretive and personal for your husband, if they choose to continue in that.  Beyond that, pornography fills one's mind with images and ideas of what people SHOULD look like, and the reality is that most of us don't look like that! We will never measure up.

Let me take one more step forward, maybe step on some toes.  Women:  if you agree that it is OK for your husband to look at pornography on his own, not involving you at all, be honest with yourself.  Do you really think that you measure up to all those perfected, greased up women he is looking at on a computer screen or in a magazine?  How does that make you feel?  Be honest with yourself.  Take a good look and tell me that you feel like you are enough, even though your husband looks at pornography when you aren't around.  I'd like to meet someone who is able to look past the insecurities and hurt that the majority of us feel.  I am not being sarcastic.  If this is YOU, let me know.  Because in all the women I have talked to or read about, every single one has been deeply wounded by their husband's viewing of pornography.

Do you not realize that when you are together, there are times that he has to envision these other women that he has seen, in order to "seal the deal"?  Do you not see that if YOU are not the only woman "in the bed", you are not his sole focus?  Don't you want to be the sole focus of your husband?  Men, don't you want your wife to only think about YOU during sex?  How would you feel, men, if you knew your wife was only able to achieve an orgasm by thinking of another man (or woman)?  Does that leave you feeling like you are able to please her?

THIS is what pornography does in relationships, whether you share it mutually or one (or both) is hiding it from the other.  It takes what is supposed to be something sacred shared between the two of you, and invites a whole host of other people into your bed.

You can agree, or disagree.  It doesn't hurt me, or upset me when I receive negative comments like the ones I have gotten today.  What it does is break my heart, because I see so many people that are blind to the truth.  That are living in darkness and don't really understand how damaging pornography is in their own relationship.  I've said before that I have a heart for marriages.  Especially hurting and wounded and broken marriages.  And I believe that pornography is central to a LOT (I did not say ALL) of these broken marriages.

Another comment I received was this:

"What you are saying is ridiculous about the book...im against porn too. Fifty shades of grey is no where near porn...there is hardly any BDSM. Before you have opions on it...maybe you should read it. Its a very good book. Like the saying goes "never judge a book by its cover". Im married..and it made our sex life alot better!! Im not gonna run off and cheat on him. In the book..when they have sex...its two people in love having sex...they end up getting married and have two children. Read the books..thats the only way your gonna know what its exactly about. As for the BDSM...christian was into it because that was all he knew. The pedifile did that to him. He wasnt a pervert...he was abused sexually and mentally. Theres no cheating in it...no mpre the one sex partners... its two people falling in love and christian just has issues that ana helps him get thru..because he had a horrible childhood before he was adopted!!!!"

Here are a few of the areas I take issue with.

#1.  To say that a book filled with sex scene after sex scene, where a virgin falls for an older, more experienced man who was into BDSM, is nowhere near porn is just...how can I put this without sounding too harsh...unwise.  What does it have to have in it for you to think that it is pornography?  Pictures?  Rape?  What???  What makes it pornography?  A book that describes sex scenes is at the very least, soft-core pornography.  That is how I define pornography.  Anything that puts those images (of OTHER people) into our minds is pornography.  Surely you can't read that book and insert yourself as Ana and your spouse/boyfriend Christian!  Even if you could, having read Erotica before, I know that these types of scenes tend to cause a "stirring" inside.  Would you say that this book is NOT Erotica even?  Surely you can grant that it is Erotica, seeing as how that is the primary genre (aside from Fan Fiction) that it falls into.  So, maybe for you, Erotica is NOT pornography.  But they are one in the same for me.  I never wrote this post saying that my definition is supreme.  This blog, again, is my opinion.

#2.  You also said that "there is hardly any BDSM".  Which, to me, indicates its presence.  And as a friend of my wrote in response to this:
"Actually he was a pervert, by definition. A pervert is a person who acts on a perversion. Merriam Webster defines perversion as "an aberrant sexual practice or interest especially when habitual". Aberrant is "Departing from an accepted standard"... So thus BDSM is considered an non accepted standard by the majority of society... no matter what it stems from. Also, she states that if you choose to read this she does not judge you. It is your freedom and choice but she, and I, believe that it is not godly and not worth exposing ourselves to."

#3.  Several people have corrected my assumption that the description of the book (when it says "affair") is not accurate.  That neither person was involved with someone else.  OK.  I stand corrected.  Are we all clear on that now?

#4.  I am not here to judge anyone for what they do in their bedroom with their partner.  And I   never said that by reading these books (or indulging in pornography), you would go out and cheat on anyone.  Though I did state that in some cases, pornography can lead to extramarital affairs.  Additionally, when you incorporate pornography into your marriage/sexual relationship, your views of one another can become distorted.  And the sad thing is that you probably don't even realize it is happening.  That's how subtle it is.  That's how subtle Satan is.  He convinces you that just a little bit won't hurt.  Or, this is acceptable if it is between my husband and I.

I do want to defend my position a little though, in saying that while it may seem like your sex life is better, at some point it won't be enough.  There will always be this thirst for more, and at some point, your view on the topic of pornography may change.  Maybe it won't.  I'm not an expert and know nothing about your marriage.  I just know that whether you think pornography is negatively impacting your marriage or not, it very possibly is.  Note, I say "possibly" because I have no way of knowing for sure.  I hope and pray that I am wrong.  But I fear that I am not.

I also received this comment today:

"God gave you the right to make choices"

You are absolutely correct.  God gave all of us the right to make choices.  That does not mean that every choice we make is the RIGHT one.  Just something to keep in mind.

I received two similar anonymous comments, and I am unsure if they are from the same person, as they came hours apart.  The first one was listed at the beginning of the blog.  The second one was this:

"I am a christian and i do beleive in god"

I have never stated that anyone I know or don't know does or does not believe in God.  Can we agree on that?

So for the people who tell me that they are a Christian and believe in God, and that lust or
pornography is not wrong, then I have to ask you, "What about the Bible?"  Do you believe the Bible is true?  As a Christian?  As someone who believes in Jesus?  As someone who believes in God?  Do you also believe in the Bible as being the Word of that God you say you believe in?

If you do, then how can you discount this:.

Matthew 5:27-30

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

I was astounded by the negative feedback I received, but was surprised it didn't come sooner.  I know that my view on the topic and a book series I haven't even read rubs some people the wrong way.  I won't apologize for that.  You have your opinion and I have mine.  I am not a person who likes to debate.  I just write my thoughts down.  Some people agree.  Some people disagree.  I won't get into a shouting match because you don't agree with me.  I refuse to do it.  But I will defend myself ONCE and then leave it at that.  This blog post is my response, my defense, as it were.

And in case you think that this is just one WOMAN'S view on the topic, check out Manturity.  This is written by a MAN, about the horrible effects that pornography can have in a marriage, and in the life of an individual.  It isn't just women who take a hard stance against pornography.  Believe it or not, there are men out there who recognize and warn against its dangers as well.

So, who else disagrees with what I am saying?  Don't be afraid to let your voice be heard.  After all, I'm sharing my voice.  By allowing you to comment, I am giving you permission to share your thoughts.  I really do want to hear what you have to say, good or bad.  Sometimes it helps to "talk" through some of these tough issue.

Music That Moves Me - Week 10

I wasn't planning to write tonight.  And I wasn't planning to move forward with my Music That Moves Me "segment", if you will.

But I've said before that while this is my blog, I write as I feel led by God (except for posts like Skyvi, where I just really wanted to share something funny with you).  Tonight is definitely one of those nights.

All day long I have been wrestling.  Maybe wrestling isn't the best word, because it would seem to imply something intense.  I've been thinking a lot today.  And not good thinking.  I've been thinking thoughts that I don't want to think.  I've been wondering things and pondering, and thinking about the past.  I've had temptations today left and right it seems.  Subtle and fairly easy to combat, but there nevertheless.  And I've recognized the enemy, trying to lure me into a trap.  Trying to get me to fall back into my old patterns.  Into habits I had, that I've been able to control.  Today was one of two days in the last four months where the temptation was strong.  I didn't give in.  I didn't feel powerless against the enemy, because I am NOT!  But it's been a rough day, inside my head.

I've shared my thoughts and fears and concerns with my ally, Kris.  We've talked and I've prayed and I feel like there has been victory.  But at the same time, I have felt weak today.  I find myself wondering about the past and if any of it was real.  I find myself thinking about people I don't want to be thinking about.  My mind has been filled with memories that I thought were gone, or at least suppressed.  And by the end of the day, I felt worn down and battered.  And still thinking.

I don't know where to go.  Is it something that we need to talk about in counseling, or is this just the enemy trying to get at me in a different way?  Part of me wonders if there are certain aspects of my past that are still unresolved.  Is it that, or is Satan really the mastermind behind all these thoughts in my head?  These insecurities I am suddenly feeling today.  Ultimately...the things that have been tossing around in my head are from the enemy, but I wonder still if I don't need to put words to them and confront them head on.  I wonder if I should try to deal with some of these things or keep pushing them down and not thinking about them.

The thing is that I know thinking about them is of no value.  I know that regardless of what the answer is, the outcome is still the same.  These thoughts and feelings that are trying to overpower me are just that: thoughts and feelings.  I have questions.  Questions that shouldn't matter, because I know that in the end, I will feel insecure and wrestle with convincing my heart that I truly am the beautiful creation that God tells me I am.  I don't even want answers.  I just want to ask some questions, even if it is just to myself.  I am the type of person that needs to talk something out over and over again before I can find peace and really feel like I'm OK with whatever the situation may be.  And lately, I've been wondering if I need to ask my questions.  Process what I am thinking and feeling.  Even if it is just to myself, or in counseling.

The reason this has come up in the format of a blog post is because it all seemed to culminate as I drove home tonight.  I was alone.  I was listening to Joy FM, which is pretty much all that I listen to these days.  I even sent Kris a chat telling him that, before, I used to look for any excuse to get out of the house.  For reasons that were not good for me.  Now, I look for excuses to return a movie or run to the store, just so I can listen to Joy FM.  And while I know I can just listen to it on the phone, my van has almost become a sort of refuge for me.  A place of safety.  I can't really explain it.  Maybe I'm just crazy like that.  Shut up!  As I got close to home, this song came on.

I got halfway through this song before I broke down.  At first, I was just thinking about how grateful I was that God has shown this truth to me.  That there could never be a more beautiful ME.  It's something I have wrestled with all my life and something I have always expected to feel, from a man.  But since Good Friday, God has been teaching me so much.  And true beauty and what it really is has been one of those lessons.  But with all the questions rattling around in my head and then this song playing, I found myself in my driveway as the song continued.  And I just lost it.  I began sobbing.  Because I heard these words: "If you feel depressed with past regrets, the shameful nights hope to forget can disappear.  They can all be washed away by the One who's strong, can right your wrongs; can rid your fears, dry all your tears and change the way you look at this big world.  He will take your dark distorted view and with His light He will show you the truth. And again you'll see through the eyes of a little girl."

I couldn't, at the time, really even understand what it was I was feeling.  Part of me was thinking about those past regrets, the shameful nights I hope to forget.  I felt a great sense of sadness.  And then I was overcome by this thought of being able to see again, through the eyes of a little girl.  I can't even put words to it, really.  I just sat there, sobbing.  Thinking, "I should go inside.  It's almost midnight."  But glued to my seat in the van, with my head in my hands, allowing myself to FEEL.  It hurts.  When I really let myself think about what I've done and all the people I have hurt.  And not just other people.  Myself.  The person I became.  The things I've done that took me so far from my husband and my God.  It wasn't self-pity I was feeling.  And while it was tempting to give in to the self-loathing Satan was enticing me with, instead I just felt so sad and broken.  I felt like the old Jamie, for just a moment.  For a moment, I questioned the validity of a statement like "There could never be a more beautiful you."  It was gone almost as soon as it pressed down upon me, but it was there.

And I guess that's why I'm really writing. Because 20 minutes ago, I couldn't identify what I was feeling.  But sitting here writing, I can see that if I am honest with myself, that was it.  Could God really see me as beautiful after all I've done?  Could I really look at myself in the mirror and see that I was fearfully and wonderfully made?  Like I said, it didn't last long and God swept down, as He so often does these days and held me in His arms, as the next song came on.  I continued to cry and listen, holding tightly to the words in that song.  And He said to me, "You were made to love.  And be loved by me."  And that was enough.  He is enough.  His love is enough.  Regardless of whether or not I need to dig deeper into these thoughts and questions I have about my past, God loves me.  And I'm going to be OK.

Why?

Why?

It is perhaps one of the most-asked questions in our country.

Why do people die?

Why did this happen to me?

Why can't this be easier?

Why are my kids driving me crazy?

And much of the time, people tend to blame God or question Him, at the very least.  There is nothing wrong with asking God these questions.  I asked God a lot why Kris' and my marriage has seemingly healed so much quicker than what is considered normal. Why do other couples have to go through more pain, more counseling, more healing than we do?  I know that part of the answer is because Kris and I both had our own issues with sexual sin.  We could understand how the other could get to the place that we did.

Additionally, we formed an alliance fairly early into our counseling/healing process.  If Kris is feeling tempted, he knows that NO MATTER WHAT it is, he can tell me.  That it isn't going to hurt me.  That I WANT him to tell me when he is feeling tempted so that we can pray and take away the enemy's power.  If he hides that from me, the enemy keeps a hold on him, and that foothold will eventually lead Kris down the same old, familiar path.  And neither of us want that.
And likewise, with me, if I am struggling, or wanting to pull away or slip back into old habits, I can tell him.  And he will pray for me.  We can talk openly about these things, knowing that it is part of the healing process and something that we need, in order to keep the enemy away from our marriage.  We are in no way perfect.  I believe there is still a lot of healing that needs to take place.  There are other areas where we need to dig deeper and peel back the layers even more.  Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever leave counseling without having spent the majority of the hour crying.  But for the most part, Kris and I are doing exceptionally well.  And that being said, I do wonder OFTEN why it has to be so difficult for others in similar situations.

Beyond that, there is so much pain.  In this world.  In our lives (all of us).  It's hard to understand. And it's OK to ask WHY?  It's OK to question why something had to happen to us.  While I don't think it's helpful to blame God and pull away from Him, I can understand that tendency.  After all, I did that.  When God didn't answer my prayers and free Kris during the first 12 years of our marriage, I asked Kris and God how long we had to wait.  I didn't blame God, per say, but I did wonder why He didn't answer my prayers.  Why did He wait so long?  It turns out that He had already given the victory.  It took Kris hitting rock bottom to realize exactly what his sin was costing him.  It took me hitting rock bottom to face my sin and allow it to truly be in the light.  To allow God to break down the wall I had built up between me and Him.  We had to reach our very lowest before God could step in and work.  Otherwise, we would not have been receptive to it.
But that isn't why I started to write this.  I wanted to talk about all the pain.  The sadness.  The sickness and the death.

It seems that I have so many friends with wounded hearts and broken marriages.  And this breaks my heart.  Since God smashed my wall down (Good Friday), He has filled me with such compassion and desire to see marriages healed and restored.  I believe that God wants to do for others what He has done for Kris and I.  And I believe that He wants to use Kris and I as tools to do this, in some cases.

Beyond that, I have a friend whose husband has stage 4 cancer, that seems to be spreading
everywhere.  The latest test results were not good.  I cannot even begin to imagine the fear and helplessness she is feeling.  My heart breaks for her and her daughters.  Will they have to say goodbye to their husband & father?  Will God call him home before they are all ready?  Because let's be honest.  None of us are ready to face the death of a loved one.  Even if we know that they will go on to be with the Lord, and free of pain and suffering, we (as humans) don't want to face that kind of pain.  When someone we love dies, they take a piece of us with them.  God can indeed comfort and heal those left behind, but knowing this doesn't make it any easier to face.  I don't want to watch my friend say goodbye to her husband.  They have two young children and I don't want her to have to face raising them without her husband by her side.  They have been suffering through all of this for almost four years.  How long will they suffer?  Will God work a miracle or will He call this man home?  He's not even 40 years old.  Cancer is everywhere.  It almost makes me as angry as Satan does sometimes.  At least with Satan, you have some control over the place he has in your life.  With cancer, you don't get to call the shots.  There is no easy fix.  There is no cure.  People die every day from cancer.  It's heartbreaking.

On Thursday, friends of mine from high school were shocked by the news that a young woman they knew and loved was in a tragic car accident with her two little babies.  Her oldest wasn't in the vehicle and neither was her husband.  Of course, it immediately reminded me of losing Angi, Josh and Jacob, while Shawn and Alex weren't in the vehicle.  The mother died several hours after the accident.  Her youngest I believe, a son, died early yesterday morning.  The other child that was in the car had only minor injuries.  It's devastating.  I can remember what I felt when I heard the news about the Huckabas.  I know that a lot of my friends back home are now feeling that same shock and sadness.  They are in pain.  They are asking Why?

There are just some things in life we can't understand.

Additionally, there are the people that I hurt directly.  Some of them wounded severely.  Some of them are still reeling from the news of what I did.  Some of them are hurting so badly and there is nothing I can do about it (besides praying, which they may not even want from me).

I can't change what I did.

I can't take it back.

I can't undo the hurt and pain I caused.

All I can do is trust God and ask Him to strengthen me and help me to recognize when Satan is tempting me to feel that guilt and shame.  I can still feel deeply saddened at the amount of hurt I caused to some people that I considered to be close friends, but I cannot let the guilt and shame rule my life anymore.  It has no place in my heart.

Because God has forgiven me.

Because Jesus took my punishment.

Because I finally understood what the Cross was all about.

But that doesn't take away THEIR pain.  And this is what I wrestle with.

I wish I had learned all of this seven years ago, so that I didn't hurt people anymore.  I wish that that part of my story had truly ended seven years ago.  But at the same time, Kris and I wouldn't have the marriage we do today if we didn't go through hell AFTER seven years ago.  Unfortunately, a lot of people got dragged down because of our stupid choices.  Because we didn't embrace God's true freedom in 2004.

While I believe that Kris and I needed to hit that rock bottom to really be free from what shackled us, I hate that so many people are hurting because of my actions.  Sometimes I am overwhelmed by an extreme sorrow.  In these moments, I allow myself to feel it.  Because I truly believe that God is showing me just a SMALL portion of what those I have hurt are feeling.  I allow myself to feel their pain.  Pain that I caused.  And I pray for them.  I pray for comfort for them.  I pray for peace in their hearts.  I pray for restoration in the areas where healing needs to happen.

And maybe they don't want my prayers.

Maybe there are some that will never be able to forgive me.

But that isn't what God wants me to think about.

He wants me to be obedient.

I think that it is OK for me to pray for those that I hurt.  Because it isn't a selfish prayer.  It's about another believer in Christ interceding on their behalf to do what I cannot-to heal broken hearts.  I can't sit by and not pray when I know that God wants me to.  It isn't about asking God to help them forgive me.  It is simply me knowing that prayer is the only thing that I can at this point.  It's the only good thing I have to offer.  It's the only amends I can make right now.  And I have to trust that it is enough for now.  Whatever God calls me to do later, in order to try to make up for the hurt I have caused, I'll do it.

Process

The definition of "process" (as a verb) is to treat or prepare for something with a specific series of actions.  When we have to emotionally "process" something, there are steps we take in order to cope and deal with life.  That is what we call processing.  And by we, I mean me.

Kris and I have been doing a lot of "processing" throughout the last four months.  It's been painful at times, but through this, we are stronger and healthier than ever before.  I am so thankful that God led us to The Outpost when He did; from the Power of Purity conference, to counseling, to finding a real church family-it is exactly what we needed.  God has been so good to us.  We are so unworthy and undeserving.  And yet, He loves us anyway.  I still can't get over it.  I hope that I never do.

About once a week now, something happens that gets my heart beating faster, makes breathing more difficult, and just in general leaves me feeling like a jumbled ball of nerves, unable to cope.  For a few moments, it literally paralyzes me.  I have to force my mind and body into action.  You've "heard" me talk about consequences and collateral damage.  I've come to accept these moments as they come, but it doesn't get any easier.  Each time, it sends me into a panic and I have to try to "process" it.  I hate that feeling.  But it is a consequence of my choices.

Here is what I find so interesting about these moments of panic.  Instead of feeling this way every moment of every day, I only feel this way about once a week (two or three times if it's a really bad week).  Instead of living with this anxiety on a regular basis, I am finally free of it, for the most part.  Until something comes up that is a reminder of my past, a consequence of my actions.  I think it is amazing to only deal with the anxiety from time to time, instead of constantly.  You don't understand what a huge difference this is from the way I was living.  I was always anxious.  Always taking Xanax to calm my nerves.  I recognize now that much of my anxiety was coming directly from the choices I was making.

That is one of the GOOD consequences for finally doing the right thing (even if God had to pull me into the light).  My anxiety is now something that I feel I have some amount of control over.  Instead of just swallowing me up, I can feel it coming on and take steps to PROCESS it.  I can pray.  I can call Kris.  I can read the many passages in the Bible about anxiety/worry.  I don't have to take 2 Xanax and wait for it to kick in.  It is no longer my first priority.  It's a last resort.  Instead of reaching for the bottle of pills, I reach for something better.  Something stronger.  The nail-scarred hand of my Savior.  Do I still take Xanax?  Yes.  Sometimes.  But with each anxious moment, I am trying harder to resist it.  To go to the one who asks me to cast my anxiety on him.  He took my punishment.  He can take my anxiety.

I heard a song today.  You're shocked aren't you?  It seemed to really fit with this.  Since Good Friday, I have been living this song and am so grateful for the second chance I was given.

"I felt love, I felt your grace.  You stole my heart that day.  You've been walking with me all this time."  - Britt Nicole, "All This Time"

How do you "process" life in all it's chaos?  Yoga?  Deep breathing?  Freaking out?  Taking it to the Lord?

Stepping out of my comfort zone

If you are familiar with this blog, it may seem to you that I don't have any problems stepping out of my comfort zone.  What you may not know, because I seem so "open", is that sharing my story with you is totally outside of my "comfort zone".

It isn't easy or fun for me to admit The Ugly Truth.

I keep thinking about writing part 2 and I find that it's not time yet.  I keep waiting for God to lead me to write the next part, but the truth is He hasn't yet.  And I don't want to write it without His leading.  But I can guarantee you that when He does lead me to share the next part of my story with you, it will be completely outside of my comfort zone, even more so than He's already taken me.  Because the second half of the story gets a lot uglier, before redemption comes.  I've done a lot of stupid stuff in my life and sadly, part 1 was only the beginning of my downward spiral.  It isn't comfortable to admit that.

Nothing about being open and honest and vulnerable is comfortable.  But I'm learning it's not about me and my comfort level.  It's about what God is doing in my life and asking me to share, so that HE can work in other people's lives.

Another thing that is completely outside of my comfort zone is talking about pornography.  It is a topic that has deeply impacted my life and it isn't easy to admit the role it had in my marriage.  HOWEVER, if no one talks about it, it stays hidden.  And that empowers the enemy.  So, when I wrote about 50 Shades of Grey, it was not comfortable, as I wound up discussing the topic of pornography.

The majority of people just don't realize where it CAN lead.  It oftentimes goes beyond simply looking at images or movies or reading stories.  What serial killer have you heard of that hasn't been involved in pornography?  I'm sure they haven't all had that in their past, but a lot of them have.  I know that implying pornography leads to becoming a serial killer is an extreme declaration, but it is what CAN happen when someone becomes so desensitized to sex and what is natural.

At some point, just looking at another woman or man isn't enough.  For some, it can lead to extramarital affairs.  For others, women or men aren't enough and they begin looking at the same sex, or worse, children.  Sometimes even those in their own family.  This stuff is real!  Thank God that He ripped pornography out of our life and marriage before it got worse than it did.  Because I truly believe that pornography has serious and long-lasting consequences.  People rape and murder and a lot of the time, we find that pornography played a role in their childhood, early adolescence and teen years.  Because at some point, simply VIEWING it wasn't enough.

Lust is thirst.  Thirst for something more.  Something "better".  Something tangible.  It never leads to anything good, unless we're talking about within the confines of marriage.  It's OK to "want" your spouse and desire to be with them.  God designed us that way.  But anything outside of our marriages, where lust is concerned, is WRONG.  Debate me all day long, I will not change my view of that.  Because I have experienced firsthand how it can desensitize you.  And how it can impact your marriage and life.  Experience speaks far louder than just opinions.

So, there it is.  Those are "topics" that are outside of my comfort zone.  It may seem like it has been easy for me to share these things, but I assure you, I am not just comfortable being an "open book".  On the other hand, I think it is extremely important for me to share my story, and so I do, as God leads me.  And I know that I am not alone.  YOU may need to know that you are not alone. If we confront these issues head on and FIGHT for our marriages, we can save ourselves a lot of hardship.  We can defeat the enemy. We can steal his power!!

I don't know about you, but I like the idea of stealing from the enemy.  He isn't going to control my life any longer!  There is a very real spiritual battle going on all around us, and we have to take a stand.  We have to lift up our Sword and FIGHT back!!

2 Corinthians 10:3-5:  "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine powers to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ."

Confession

When I woke up at 4am after less than 4 hours of sleep, I had no idea what the day would hold.  I had to leave early to go pick Katherine and Kaleb up from camp.  The camp was 2 1/2 hours away and my alarm wasn't set to go off until 5am.  I tried to go back to sleep but then I had a nightmare, and after almost elbowing Kris in the face when I jolted awake, I decided going back to sleep wasn't the best idea.  So I got up and got ready, then I laid down on the couch.

I got back home around noon, and as I was sitting on the couch, I got an email from my mother-in-law.  She told me that she really thought it would be best if my parents heard my whole story from me directly.  I thought about it and realized she was right.  I was so ready to move forward and I knew that God was ready for me to share my story, but I hadn't stopped to consider my parents.  So I took her wise advice and began the process of sharing with my parents what has been going on and about God's work in our life and our marriage.

I was very scared.  It's one thing to tell a complete stranger my story.  But someone that I know and love, and someone that loves me?  All kinds of questions go through your head.  What will they think?  Will they be disappointed in you?  Will they still love you?  Will this make your relationship stronger or worse?  I had so many fears flying through my head and heart.  I was incredibly anxious and couldn't breathe.  But I took that step forward that I had been trying to avoid for as long as possible.

I realized that none of those questions mattered.  I knew what I had to do and so I did it.  And really, they were just stall tactics from the enemy.  It is amazing to me, being able to see how the enemy is constantly at work.  I am so thankful that God has opened my eyes and is helping me to realize when my thoughts are not of Him.  Any thought that isn't of God, must come from the enemy.  Fear is from the enemy.  And it keeps us tied down.  It keeps us where we are.  It keeps us from moving forward.  And if the enemy can keep us stranded in fear, he is accomplishing his purpose.

I wasn't ready to tell my parents the ugly truth about my life.  But God knew that I was going to be able to do it, gave me the strength, and blessed me through their loving and forgiving response towards me and Kris.

And of course, I heard a new song today that I just HAVE to share with you.  I know that music isn't for everyone but it is a huge part of how God speaks to me and helps me through life.  I don't believe in coincidences, as I have said many times before.  I think that God gave me this song at just the right time.  It was shortly after I received the reply from my parents.  I was driving and feeling overwhelmed by God's goodness and grace in my life.  I was thankful that my fears were unfounded.  I was grateful to have parents that have been praying for me and my family, and that love us so much.  And then this song came on.  And God just reminded me that I no longer have to live as that person I used to be.  In fact, I am NOT that person.  I am NEW.  Check this out!  The lyrics are below. They speak for themselves.  Very powerful.

I Am New - Jason Gray

Now I won't deny
The worst you could say about me
But I'm not defined
By mistakes that I've made
Because God says of me

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

Who I thought I was
And who I thought I had to be
I had to give them both up
Cause neither were willing
To ever believe

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

Too long I have lived
In the shadows of shame
Believing that there was no way I could change
But the one who is making everything new
Doesn't see me the way that I do
He doesn't see me the way that I do

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
Dead to the old man, I'm coming alive
I am new

Forgiven
Beloved
Made in the image of the Giver of life
Righteous and Holy
Reborn and Remade
Accepted and Worthy
This is our new name

This is who we are now

Music That Moves Me - Week 9

I know I've posted this first song before, but it needs to be posted again.  Partly because it is one of the best songs out there right now.  Partly because tonight, I have an agenda.  It's debatable on whether or not this is Jamie's agenda or God's.  I really feel like it's God moving me, so we will see where this winds up!  I love writing that way.  Just writing and letting God guide me.  It reminds me of that verse in Proverbs 16:9; honestly this is how I approach writing.  "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps."  I have an idea or a plan that I want to write about and as I start to write, God starts shaping it into what He wants it to be.

He does the same thing when Kris preaches.  Kris will have his outline, but then when he gets up there to preach, as long as He is focused on God, God takes over and you can really hear God speaking THROUGH him.  I hope that is what happens through this blog.  Because it isn't supposed to be about Jamie.  It's supposed to be about God.  Tony mentioned tonight "Audience of One" and that's what I want this blog to be.  Do I want others to be touched and comforted and moved to action by this blog?  Sure.  But not because of me.  Because of God.  Ultimately, this is my journey with God and I will trust Him to do whatever He thinks is best.

All that to say, Thank GOD we don't have to hide scars!! His are covering OURS!  And be patient...there are some spelling/grammatical errors.  Look past them and hear what God wants to say to you.

I think that this song sets up perfectly the next song.  Though, you know me.  It will likely be a lengthy introduction to the song.  I met someone tonight.  A lady that from the start was dear to my heart.  I can't even explain it.  As soon as she walked in the door, I wanted to know her.  I wanted to connect with her.  And because I can't quite explain it, I'm convinced it was totally a God thing.  And I know, from the outcome a couple of hours later that it completely WAS a God thing.  And I am so extremely thrilled that God allowed me to be a part of it.

Some of you know that I made this bracelet recently.

I wear it most days.  A few people have commented on it and I've shared how "My Chains Are Gone" and my purpose for making the bracelet.  It's been so easy to talk to people about what God has been doing in my life and this bracelet has been a conversation starter on several different occasions.  For those not familiar with my reason for making this bracelet, I'll explain it.

The Cross represents what Jesus did for everyone.  And...even moreso, understanding and BELIEVING what He did FOR ME.  That I could finally, once and for all, lay my guilt and shame at the foot of the Cross.  I could finally be free from what had weighed me down so long.  I could trade my ashes in for beauty, and truly wear forgiveness like a crown.

The handcuffs that say "Freedom" symbolize, well, FREEDOM!  Freedom from sin. Freedom from guilt and shame.  Freedom from the hold Satan had in my life for so many years.  And the Swarovski crystal at the bottom, it is a reminder of the blood that Jesus shed for me, that purchased my freedom.

And my favorite?  The "hope" charm.  For so many years I lived in defeat.  I prayed so long for things to change.  I HOPED that my marriage would change.  That Kris would change.  That I could get out of the unhealthy relationship I was in.  And then, somewhere along the line, when God didn't answer my prayers, and Kris didn't overcome, and I found that I WANTED to stay in my bad relationship with someone that didn't belong to me, I gave up.  It was the last thing I had held on to.  Hope was all I had left.  And then, suddenly, it was gone.  I was a hopeless fool, living a life I hated.  Living without hope is debilitating.  Without hope, there is nothing left.  As long as there is a shred of hope left, we can still press on.  We can usually pick ourselves up and keep going.  But what do you do when all hope is gone?  When you've given up hope?  Sometimes I think that maybe the answer is different for everyone.

For me, God had to pull me up.  God had to grab me and move me.  Because I wasn't willing.  I wasn't ready.  I wanted to keep punishing myself.  I wanted to hold on to my guilt and shame, because I simply could not understand that my punishment had already been nailed to the Cross.  I felt like I deserved to be punished.  Since God wasn't doing it, and Kris wasn't doing it, I just knew that I had to.  I didn't have that hope anymore.  But God had other plans for me.  He really showed me how to have hope again.  Now everything is different.  I have hope and it is one of the most amazing things to have in my life again.

All of that to bring us to a song I heard tonight on the way home from Stories.  And I just knew that God wanted me to share this song.  It brought me a great deal of comfort.  And if this woman that I met tonight could really feel the truth in this song, it would be such a blessing.  My heart aches for this!  I can't describe it.

I want to share one more thing before I show you the song.  Tonight I was wearing the "My Chains Are Gone" bracelet.  There was a moment tonight when I heard God very clearly say "Take your bracelet off."  I obeyed, unclasping it from my wrist.  Then God said "When the time is right, give it to that woman."  As God orchestrates all things, we left at the same time.  So I was given an opportunity to give her my bracelet.  I explained to her why I had made it and what it meant to me.  My hands were shaking as I put the bracelet on her wrist.  I've NEVER done anything like this before.  I've talked to people about my bracelet.  And my story.  But this was the first time that I really felt like the bracelet was no longer mine.  I KNEW I had to share not just my story, but the reminder I have of my story.  And so I did.

It was such an amazing experience.  I had never met this woman before tonight.  But I know that God wanted this to happen.  It was no coincidence.  THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES.   And I hope and pray that I will meet her again.  I really love being a part of what God is doing here in my life and how He is using my story.

So...now that I've explained all of that, I'll share the song I know God orchestrated for me to hear tonight on the drive home.  It's called "You Can Have Me", by the Sidewalk Prophets.

And I wasn't originally planning to add this one, but I feel it is necessary.  For all of you who feel like you aren't strong enough, and that you can't do it alone; for you who are hurting and at the end of your rope, all hope gone, God can carry you to the Cross.  Will you let Him?  Surrender.  Surrender the temptation.  The pain,  The hurt.  The guilt and the shame.  Surrender yours fears and let God carry you to the Cross.  He doesn't always expect us to get up and get here on our own.  Sometimes, He carries us.  And I think He is OK with that.  The point is, we just have to get to the Cross.  One way or another!

Where are you at?  Can you pick yourself up and run to the foot of the Cross, or are you feeling hopeless and alone?  You are NOT alone.  If you literally cannot pick yourself up and get to the Cross, cry out to Jesus (another great song!).  God can carry you to the Cross.

Surrender.

Stop fighting.

Let God take you to the Cross, and you can lay your fear and your guilt and your shame down there.  He is big enough to take it all.  And to quote my favorite kids' cartoon Veggie Tales, "God made you special, and He loves you very much!"  Such a simple saying, and yet so profoundly true!!

The Ugly TRUTH - Part 1

***I want to make it clear before I post anything about my husband that he knows what I am writing and has given me permission to share part of his story.***

If you haven't read yesterday's post, I would recommend starting here, as this is a continuation of that post.  It sets the scene for what I am about to divulge to the blogging world and anyone who comes across this blog.

As I ended the last blog, I told you that seven years ago (really almost 8 now) I was one of those lofty people who couldn't understand how could ANY woman have an affair?

Men seem to have affairs all the time.

And we seem to accept that and are, for some reason, more easily able to forgive them.

But if a woman commits adultery, why do we judge her so much more harshly than we do men?

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I think it is because we can't see ourselves ever being in that situation, and so it seems so extreme.

But how DOES a woman get to that point?

To the place where she seeks love and attention from the arms of another man?

I can tell you this much.  Whether it is a man or a woman, it doesn't always just happen intentionally.  It's not as if I woke up one day and decided to find someone to commit adultery with.  I didn't see someone and make a choice to pursue that relationship.

I didn't understand that things like adultery are a "slow fade", as I wrote yesterday.  Before I experienced it myself, if I heard about someone who had committed adultery, male or female, it mostly made me feel sad.  And I would think "I'll never be one of 'those' people."  I would never be one of those women.  No matter how bad things got, no matter what happened between Kris and I, I could never in a million years foresee myself committing adultery.  One of the TOP TEN SINS (according to the Ten Commandments anyway...)

When Kris and I were dating, he admitted that he struggled with lust and pornography.  It wasn't something he EVER accepted as OK.  It wasn't something he was proud of and he tried very hard to overcome it.

We were young.

And naive.

We thought that getting married would solve all the problems he had with lust.

Oh how hopeful we were.

And how stupid.

We didn't see the trap Satan was setting for us, before we even got married.  Though we were in Bible college, and on fire for God at the time and very much "in love", we had NO IDEA what awaited us.

When I learned that Kris was still battling against lust and pornography, months into our marriage, I felt so many emotions.

Hurt.

Sad.

Angry.

Frustrated.

Rejected.

Kris would stumble and I would go through a gambit of emotions.  We would talk and pray.  I would comfort and forgive him and while it would take us a few days to get back to "normal", we eventually did.  I always took him back.

This began a vicious cycle that would eventually take a very deadly toll on our marriage.

The few girlfriends I shared my heart with would say "There is no way I could ever put up with that." or "Why don't you just leave him?  Why do you put up with it?"

Sometimes I think it is similar to a battered woman.  Sometimes we allow ourselves to "put up" with extremely hurtful things, because we are afraid that there is nothing else out there for us.  Those of us with low self-esteem feel like there is no one else in the world that will love us and take care of us.

We also take a loved one back time and time again, because we hope things will change.  We hope it will get better.  We hope that whatever addiction our loved one is battling they will overcome.  Especially when you're a Christian.

Beyond that, I WAS a Christian.  I grew up believing that in God, and Christ's death on the Cross, though I wouldn't learn for over a decade later the truth of the Cross.  I knew that divorce was wrong.  Biblically, it was wrong, except (according to what I knew) for marital unfaithfulness.  If lusting is the same as committing adultery, wouldn't it be safe to safe that I could legitimately have reason to divorce Kris?  Because while it wasn't physical adultery with another person, he did commit adultery.  Over and over again.

But more than that, before we got married, we promised one another that no matter how bad it got, divorce would never be an option.  I don't think we understood at the age of 19 how hard marriage was, or would be.  We never saw a time where things would get so bad that we would never want to be together.

For 12 years, I lived under the shadow of this promise I had made.  I couldn't divorce him, even though there were times I wanted out.  And we had four small children thrown in the mix.  "I could never survive on my own", I would think to myself.  And Kris is an amazing father.  I never consciously contemplated divorce until February 11, 2012.

During the first five years of our marriage, while we were still young and trying to live for God, in the midst of our struggles, my faith started to grow weak.  My hope began to die.  That vicious cycle we were in because of Kris' addiction to pornography took it's toll on me.  At some point, I quit caring.  About myself.  About Kris.  About our marriage.  I gave up emotionally.  I pulled away from Kris (and little by little, God) and built up a wall of protection around my heart.  I locked Kris out.

At the same time, Satan had big plans for how he could wreak havoc in our lives.  In the midst of our turmoil, Satan took that as an invitation into our lives.  And rather than fight him, we just rolled over and let him make a mess of things.  Yes, we were responsible for the choices we made, but there was a very real spiritual battle going on in our home and in our hearts.

And then, there was a man.

From church.

A very good friend.

Even back then, I never thought we'd be more than friends.  I liked him, sure.  He was nice to everyone and funny.  We connected on a very intimate, emotional level from the start, but I didn't "have feelings for him".

But he became increasingly nicer to me.  He started out by telling me how smart I was.  He began to compliment me here and there, always something different.  He would tell me I looked nice.  This continued and eventually we began to exchange texts and emails, all kept very light and casual.

Over time, as expected, our relationship began to grow and I was emotionally drawn to this man.  He was fulfilling that void that I'd been longing to have filled.  I wanted someone to think I was beautiful.  I wanted someone to look at me and think "Wow!  You're gorgeous!"

"She is yearning for shelter and affection that she never found at home.  She is searching for a hero to ride in, to ride in and save the day.  And in walks her Prince Charming.  And he knows just what to say.  Momentary lapse of reason and she gives herself away."  - "Does Anybody Hear Her, by Casting Crowns.

That is exactly what is was like for me.

Kris certainly wasn't saying those things to me.  Verbal affirmation has always been hard for him.  I always believed that a huge part of it was his addiction to pornography.  That because of all he had seen on that stupid internet, his view of me was distorted.  He couldn't really see me.  And I had always thought very poorly of myself to begin with; so having a husband who preferred to look at women with better, thinner, prettier bodies than my own left me with no self-esteem at all.

In the beginning I couldn't separate his addiction to pornography from his desire for me, his wife.  In my mind, he liked those women better.  He preferred to look at them alone and hide in the darkness with his sin than to be with me.

The reality is that he saw what he was doing as sin.  He knew it wasn't right.  And he made efforts to overcome.  Bible studies.  Men's groups.  Accountability partners.  He desperately wanted to be free from his addiction.  He knew that it made me feel horrible about myself.  He knew it made me feel unwanted.  None of it worked.

Occasionally Kris would tell me that he wanted me and that he thought I was beautiful, but only when I would point blank ask him why he didn't!  It used to make me so angry. He would finally say the words I wanted to hear, when I pointed out that he wasn't saying them.  I can still remember once trying to explain to him that everyone woman wants to feel like her husband thinks she is the most beautiful woman in the world.  Even though I know that I am not and that there are other women far skinnier and far more beautiful, I longed for someone to see me as the most beautiful person in the world.  Instead of understanding this, Kris went on this sort of diatribe about how there is beauty everywhere and different degrees of beauty.  He didn't get it and he certainly didn't make me feel like he thought I was the most beautiful woman in the world.  In fact, it was quite the opposite.  It was as if he was confirming my doubts-that to him, I WASN'T the most beautiful woman in the world.

So, as my relationship with this other man grew stronger, I learned how to hide.  I have always hated lying.  I told Kris that lying to me about the pornography was worse than the pornography itself.  I saw lying as vile and wouldn't tolerate it.  And yet, at some point, I became the liar.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever forget the night in July of 2004 that my emotional affair turned into a physical one.  It was never my intention.  I was content to just leave it like it was.  I loved how good this man made me feel about myself and how kind he was to me.  Another line from "Slow Fade" that really hits home with me is in the second verse.  It says "Be careful little ears what you hear.  When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near.  Be careful little lips what you say.  For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray."

While I would have been content to leave it at an emotional affair, even though I knew it was wrong, he wanted more.  And because I was so tied to him emotionally, little by little, I allowed more; because I didn't want to lose the emotional fulfillment that I received from him.

We became co-dependent.

Each filling a need that the other had.

It wasn't a healthy relationship, but it is where we found ourselves.

I can't tell you how many times I tried to end it.  I knew it was wrong and I knew we needed to end our relationship.  The times I worked up the courage to end it, he always had something sweet to say or a way to reason out why I should wait until tomorrow (which we all know never comes); and every time I gave in.  And I wouldn't end it.  Once in counseling, during this time, the counselor told me that if I didn't end the affair, it would kill me emotionally.

In the end, she was right.  I wouldn't learn just how right she was until much later.

In October of 2004 (just 3 months into this affair) Kris found a chat on my computer between me and this other man.  Kris called me (I was out at the time) and I could tell he was really upset.  I asked him what was wrong.  His exact words (I can still hear them) were "I think you know what."

I still played dumb, praying that he hadn't somehow found out.  He asked where I had been and who I had been meeting.  I just sat there, unable to respond, as I tried to process the truth that he really did know.  He told me to come home so we could talk.

I was driving home that night and had a very important decision to make.  I can vividly remember the fear I felt.  The horror.  What would he say?  What would he do?  Would he leave me?  What I had done was so much worse to me than his pornography addiction.  Because while they ultimately were the same thing, mine was with a real person and this seemed so much worse to me.  I was so scared.

My first instinct was to flee.  To run away.  To just keep driving and see what would happen.  But I felt like I owed it to him to go home and face what I had done.  I knew that I had to muster the courage to deal with the confrontation that would follow when I arrived at home.

It was late at night and all the kids were asleep.  We only had three at this time.  I sat on the couch and he sat across from me.  He asked me a few questions, all of which I answered honestly.  While I hadn't actually crossed that line of having intercourse with this other man, I had crossed lines.  I had sinned.  I had been physically involved with another man.

After hearing my answers to his questions, he reacted in the last possible way I expected.  He told me that he loved me and that what he had done to me over the last seven years was no different than my own sin.  He loved me unconditionally.  He loved me as God loved me.  I just couldn't understand it.  I knew in that moment that I was in the presence of God's divine love and grace.  I knew that Kris was showing me in a very real way how God loves us.

But I couldn't accept it.  I was so weighed down with guilt and shame over what I had done.  I was crushed because I had hurt my husband more deeply than he would admit.  But I knew him pretty well by now.  I knew that while he didn't speak to me in anger or throw the affair in my face as the months progressed, I had hurt him.  But because he is a loving, God-fearing man, he forgave me and continued to love me.

Things got better for a while.  He had wanted to know what this other guy gave me that he didn't.  And so I told him.  And so Kris tried to speak my love language.  He tried to use verbal affirmation to connect with me.  For a few weeks.  And then he just stopped.  I was still so overwhelmed with the guilt and shame, and I felt like I didn't deserve any kindness from him anyway, so I didn't say anything.  It came as no surprise to me that his "freedom" from his addiction didn't last long.  A few months, maybe.  It was devastating all over again, and yet, how could I be upset?  I had been with another man.  He just looked at images on a computer screen.  My sin was so much worse than his, wasn't it?

It was a very dark time in my life.  At the time, it was the lowest I had ever felt.  I was depressed and ashamed.  I couldn't accept God's or Kris' love for me.  Because it didn't make sense.  Not after what I had done.  Not after what I had become.

Our secret stayed fairly contained.  Not a lot of people knew about the affair.  The ones that did accepted me with love and forgiveness, but it still wasn't enough for me to really feel it and find healing.  I should have gone to counseling afterwards.  Kris and I went to a couple of counseling sessions in the beginning, but we wound up quitting for reasons I can't remember.   Maybe it was because we felt like our relationship was restored and things at home were going good.  I hid my deep sense of shame and worthlessness from Kris.  Life got back to a semi-normal state in the months that followed the aftermath.  We felt closer to each other and I could see Kris was trying to fill my emotional needs.

I got pregnant within a month of the affair ending and we had a miscarriage right before Christmas. I was about 10 weeks along.  Little more than two weeks had passed when I got pregnant with Olivia.  We were moving forward and life seemed good.  While I still bore the weight of the guilt and shame and called myself everything you can think of, outwardly I tried to be a good, Godly woman.  I read my Bible, prayed for Kris regularly that God would free him from his addiction, and tried to be the woman God wanted me to be.

But I was wounded.  And I never really healed and experienced God's grace and forgiveness.  I knew about it, cognitively.  But my mind and my heart were so disconnected from each other.  And it became something that I would wrestle with for the next seven years.

50 Shades of Trash *For Adults ONLY*

I fear even mentioning this book on here, because I know that some people will wholeheartedly disagree with my opinion.  I am in NO way trying to promote this book.  I want to make that clear.  And I also make no apologies for my OPINIONS on this book.

I have not read this book and have no intention of reading this book.  If you have read, or are currently reading this book, I am also not judging you.  Read whatever you want.

HOWEVER, this post is a WARNING to anyone who wants to protect their marriage and guard their heart.  If you value the sanctity of marriage and keeping your heart and mind pure, do not read 50 Shades of Grey.

Stay away from this book!  Please!  Christian women, especially.  Just don't give Satan the foothold he so desperately wants to have.  He has enough ways to attack you and threaten your marriage and your family.  Having been through hell and back with my own marriage, I can guarantee that reading this book will only cause harm, or at the very least allow Satan just a small inch into your life that you don't want.  If this doesn't apply to you, read the book.  And know I'm not judging you. I just want to warn those friends of mine who are concerned about whether or not this is a book that they should read.

When a friend in California first suggested I read this book, I immediately went to the best source - Amazon.com.  I read the book description, and that alone was warning enough for me to stay away.  If you have been wondering about this book and whether or not you should read it, I believe that the summary on Amazon.com is enough for you to judge whether or not you should put this into your mind.

"When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires."

I knew immediately that this was not a book that God would approve of ME reading.  Everyone has to judge for himself (or herself).  I do not ever read the romance novels, especially those that would be considered soft-core pornography.  Primarily because the writing is so often just terrible.  But now, I recognize that little allowances like this book just fill a spot in my heart that was meant for Jesus.

For all intents and purposes, this book fits into the soft-core pornography category.  And the fact that it deals with sex (specifically BDSM-which is an abbreviation that is used to describe domination or a slave/master relationship between a couple) as it's primary theme, is the biggest deterrent for me.  I've never liked this theme in general, so perhaps some of it is just my own personal issue.  But it isn't just that theme.  It is the fact that the main male character is involved in an affair with a very young and naive girl, and based on all of the reviews I've read (good and bad), it is full of sex.

If there is one thing I hate most in this world (besides Satan), it is pornography.  Our society thinks pornography is acceptable.  A vast majority of CHRISTIANS think it is acceptable.  Because God doesn't say "Thou shall not look at pornography." does not make it Biblically OK.  Jesus tells us that lust is the same as actually having a physical affair.  Where there is pornography, there is lust.  Which means if you're married, there is adultery.  The same applies to WRITTEN pornography.  Erotica.  Whatever name you want to put on it.

Any time that we expose ourselves to this, we are changed.  It's subtle at first.  So subtle that most times, you have no idea you are being changed.  It is a series of little compromises that will inevitably lead to more and more compromise.  And some day, no matter how much you think you are in control of your own life, the darkness will be exposed.  It may be only days.  It may be years.  But it WILL be exposed.  And pornography controls the person that views it.  Like the Casting Crowns song, "Slow Fade" says:  "Be careful little eyes what you see.  It's the second glance that binds your heart as darkness pulls the strings."  This couldn't be more true.

I'm not getting up on a high horse as one who is on the outside looking in.  While I'm not ready to tell my WHOLE story yet, I will admit that I am not unfamiliar with pornography and the impact it can have on a marriage.

Have I ever viewed pornography?

I'm not proud of the decisions I have made in my life.

However, I'm willing to step up and tell you that yes, I have viewed pornography; picture, video and written.  I am not naive about what all is out there.  I stand as one who KNOWS more about this topic than I care to know.

As you know, I like to write.  I'll even go so far as to admit that when I was running from God, I wrote some short pieces of erotica myself.

I didn't even intend to get into this and admit that, but God guides this blog, not me.

So there you have it.  Lest you think I am just bashing a topic I know nothing about.

I'm not unblemished.

I've told you I've made some really stupid mistakes in my life.  Allowing any piece of pornography into my mind and heart wasn't even the STUPIDEST mistake I made.

I even know the justifications for why it's "not that bad" or "well, at least it's not this sin or that..."

We convince ourselves that it doesn't cause any harm.  I'm calling B.S. on that one!  It is impossible to truly know how deeply impacted your life and the lives of those around you can be when we think that pornography is OK.  Even within the confines of marriage.  One thing Kris and I have learned is that it is most definitely NOT OK.  ESPECIALLY within the confines of marriage.  I am my beloved and he is mine.  God intended my body and my mind to be for him.  God intended his body and his mind to be for me.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!  Physical or otherwise.

Also, with the invention of the internet, pornography is EVERYWHERE.  And much more easily accessible than it ever used to be.  It's in commercials, TV, movies, billboards, books.  Every time a man turns around, he is tempted.  And I'm not saying that women aren't tempted with this as well, but we all know that where advertisements are concerned, it is usually the woman, not the man who is objectified.  I saw a commercial the other day for men's deodorant (MEN'S DEODORANT!!!) that had four women in bikinis in it.  Seriously?

I could write all day on how angry pornography makes me.  Pornography, along with several other issues, destroyed my marriage.  I started to write "almost destroyed" but the reality is, that it did destroy my marriage.

But THANK GOD we have a God that is bigger than we are.  That gives us so much grace and mercy.  Thank God that He restored Kris and I and allowed us to start over with our marriage.  Thank God that pornography no longer rules our marriage.  We now both understand that we belong to God first, then to one another.

And that's it.

No one else is allowed in our bed.

I know that may sound like a strange statement to some.  But for our entire married life, until February 19th, there were WAY TOO MANY people/images/whatever (in some form or another) in our bed.  Until February 19th, the day I came home, it was never just God, me and Kris.

That's the sad truth of it.

It's ugly and it's not even the whole story.

All of this to say, if you are a Christian woman and you are considering reading 50 Shades of Grey, please take my words into consideration before you read it.

Few people make it through what Kris and I have made it through.  We are not a statistic and I am thankful every day for that.  We should be a statistic.  Most marriages don't survive what Kris and I have.  That is a fact.  And while I am no statistician (look at me using fancy words), I believe that pornography is present (in one form or another) in the majority of marriages today.

And it breaks my heart.

Because I KNOW what it does to a marriage.

It is part of my story.

It is part of our story.

Someday Kris and I will share more, but for now, just know that what seems innocent or socially acceptable can cause deep and lasting damage.

Protect your hearts and your marriages.

**Two weeks after writing this post, I suddenly began to receive some negative feedback, some people who didn't quite agree with me.  This is my response:  "For All The Haters".
