Daniel Fast - Halfway There

After a full week and a half on the Daniel Fast, I have to say that it's been a very enlightening experience.  It is nothing like I expected, physically or spiritually.  I thought that perhaps it might be more difficult to give up the food I love and adhere to an extremely strict "diet" but it really hasn't been.

Do I want a huge piece of chocolate cake?

Actually, no.  For whatever reason, now that the sugar is out of my body, I'm not craving it at all.  I saw a candy cane on my end table this morning and thought about what it would be like to eat it, and my mind was screaming at me, "Why on earth would you just put pure sugar in your body like that?"  The thought disgusted me, and I didn't crave or want anything sweet.

Do I want an 8 oz. steak, a grilled chicken breast, or some shrimp linguine from Red Lobster?

Yeah, I kind of do.  I find that instead of the sugar, it's the meat and carbs I miss the most.  The other night, I told Kris he needed to put the one-pouch fettucine alfredo away so that I couldn't see it.  It was really bothering me to have it out in plain sight, tempting me.

Blue Mountain

I can't even begin to count the multitude of kindnesses God has shown to me, especially these last 9 months. I have been home for NINE months now!  Can you believe that?  I am amazed.  And in that time, I have rediscovered my husband, I love him more than I ever thought was possible, I am fighting for my marriage against a very powerful enemy, I found the Cross, and God's blessings have been pouring down and me and my family.

I finally got a good job that is actually quite stress-free, and in retrospect, I see now why God placed me in this company, with this job.  I needed something low-key as Kris and I continue to heal and I continue to grow spiritually.  I also needed something that would "work with" my constant pain, and if I were in a more stressful environment, the pain (no doubt) would be even greater.  Kris' business is finally beginning to get the growth we've been praying for, so maybe in a year, we'll be able to put the kids back in private school.  Keep praying for that!

But one of my favorite blessings is all the amazing music I have discovered along the way.  I got to see Chris August perform "Battle" and some of my other favorites at the TobyMac concert.  More recently, I had the chance to see Matt Maher and Brandon Heath perform.  Friday night was a night I had been eagerly anticipating.  The songs by both of these men have moved me to tears on multiple occasions and filled my heart with hope and joy and peace.  I have loved their music and was happy to have the opportunity to go with my mother-in-law and son to this concert.  We had been planning it since the concert was announced, and I was really looking forward to it.

AFTER-SCHOOL activities/Weekend Update

Is anyone else finding that in place of after-school activities, more and more activities are taking place BEFORE school?

No?

Just me?

When Abbey came home and dramatically begged me to be in drama club, I was not about to deny her that privilege.  I responded with an enthusiastic 'yes!' because she was SO excited and said it with such FLAIR.  Additionally, it is FREE.

Trying to catch my breath...

Hello...my name is Jamie...

And it's been 5 days since my last blog post.

Six months ago this lapse in writing would have been due to my mental state of mind. It would have meant that I was really struggling, emotionally. It meant that maybe my close friends should call and check up on me. This time, however, the delay in writing was a GOOD thing.

Mostly (only because I've been sick).

Kris and I had the opportunity to go to a Growth Weekend, lead by Christian Marriage Ministry.

We met a lady at Stories one night who told us about the weekends, and just two weeks before the upcoming weekend, I found out about it. Sure there was another one in November, but Kris and I didn't want to wait. Anything we can do at this point to grow closer and strengthen our marriage and relationship with God is something we will cling to. We both went into the weekend not knowing what to expect. We came away from the weekend changed. There is too much good to even be able to express it here in this blog. I can't even fully put words to everything that transpired during this Growth Weekend. But I can tell you that it is called "Growth Weekend" for a reason.

Your relationship, if you are open and willing, WILL grow. And after experiencing it for myself, I really want other couples, strong OR broken (or somewhere in between) to experience this weekend. It will change your marriage and you will leave the weekend feeling closer to your spouse than you ever thought possible. For some, maybe it will just be a reminder of why you fell in love, and give you hope for a brighter tomorrow (sounds cliche, I know, but it's true). For others, it will deepen what you already have. On top of all that we learned and the closeness that resulted, we had a weekend completely free of the worries of work, kids, cooking, etc...

Nowhere to go.

No one needing anything from us.

Almost 48 hours of just the two of us.

It was amazing!

All of our needs (mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically) were met during our Growth Weekend. And if you are in the St. Louis area (and even if you aren't), consider setting aside the first weekend in November to experience this for yourself. Kris and I were so moved by the ministry and the weekend that we knew we HAD to be a part of what CMM (Christian Marriage Ministry) is doing in the lives and hearts of broken people and their marriages. I've told you before that I have a heart for broken women and hurting marriages. This ministry came along at just the right time, and will hopefully give me an outlet to minister to those who were once in my place.

Broken.

Bitter.

Hurting.

Alone.

There is hope.

There is always Hope.

He stands at the door and knocks.

You just have to let Jesus in. You have to (as Tony would say), take Jesus to your past. Take Him and let Jesus heal the hurt and mend what is broken.  Cry out to Jesus.

I'll write later about something significant I learned when it comes to guilt and feeling ashamed, in terms of my own life of sin, that most of you now know about. I've been sick since we got back from the weekend, so I haven't done much besides sleep and try to stay cool in my house, which isn't working too well. At least the kids aren't here suffering in the heat as well (my mom and dad are graciously watching them this week!) I am finally feeling better today, but 3 infections (one right on top of the other) has been taxing.

Resumes are HARD

I completed my resume. I *might* have had help from Bethanie. She may have provided all the correct wording that would appeal to those hiring for administrative assistant positions. I have at least 3 jobs at Washington University that I am going to apply to. I know there are more that were just posted. One was an editing gig, that I think I would really enjoy! I know that God will put me in the right place. But I'll tell you this. I spent 6 hours yesterday tracking down employee information, dates, etc...and created a resume. I gave it to my friend to check out and she wrote all over it in red ink!!!

Can you believe that?

So she spent some time working on it this afternoon and again tonight, and we have finally finished it! And I LOVE the way it looks! Now...to apply for jobs. Please pray for us in the job transition. I think it will wind up being a really good thing for us, and it will give me a chance to interact with people again, which I need. I am SO ready for summer to be over with!!

With VBS this week and way too many late nights, my children have NOT been good. They've been downright horrid. That's the word I used with Kris earlier. They were all so horrible at different times today. Really, this whole week. And it's not that they are horrible kids. They just haven't been getting enough sleep and it is wearing us all down. And their behavior is out of control.

While I feel sorry for my mother-in-law for having to keep them this weekend, I am actually really looking forward to a marriage weekend that Kris and I were going to. Last fall, we went to a marriage conference. I was NOT in a good place. Kris was still bound by the chains of addiction, and I was living a second life no one knew about. The conference was OK. But for me, it didn't mean much. I tried, while I was there. But when it came time to repeat our vows to one another, I just stood there crying. I couldn't do it. And while I do not think this weekend will be anything like what we went to in the fall (as far as the style), I do believe that this is going to be an extremely refreshing time for us.

Satan has been attacking Kris and I like crazy. I don't know what he is trying to prevent from happening, as Kris and I aren't teaching at VBS or anything. But he keeps attacking, right before VBS. Kris and I have so little time right now, and the time we do have we spend fighting. And it is usually over stupid, trivial issues. We'll fight about the fact that we're fighting. I realized what was happening tonight on the way to VBS. I spent the first ten minutes there trying to hold back tears. Then Sheri came over (I love her!!!!) and asked how I was doing. I'm not really good at faking it. So I just shared briefly how I felt like Satan was attacking me and Kris. She hugged me, from the side and told me she'd be praying for me.  And I cried.  Then enemy is out there. We have to fight back! We HAVE to.

Have I mentioned that I love my church?

So much!

Tonight was crazy hair night at VBS. I thought I'd post a few pictures of my kids, since I don't have permission to post other people's kids! We tried a weird Koolaid version to dye their hair but it didn't work out, so we used my friend's blue hair coloring for the kids. Just little spots here and there.

You can't really see the blue tips but I also put her hair in pony tails all over and then linked them all together in various places.

We had pony tails in his hair in the spot where the blue is, but he took them out.

She used Mama Kat's YouTube tutorial on how to make bangs so she went for that look, then we dyed that one strip of her hair.

Such a free spirit!  I love this shot of Abbey.

A burden for women

I was that lost cause
I was the outcast
You died for sinners just like me
A grateful leper at Your feet

You are good
You are good
And Your love endures forever

You are good
You are good
And Your love endures forever

I love the lyrics to "Jesus Friend of Sinners," but I have to say that the last part is my favorite.  Hands down my favorite; lyrics I can relate to.

I've told you before that I have a heart for broken marriages.  Even more so, I am realizing that I have a very heavy heart for wounded, broken women.  Women, who like me, are afraid to let God in.  Who are afraid to let their walls down.  God keeps putting people in my path.  He's been doing it since February, since before I even discovered the truth and the beauty of the Cross.  For some reason, I knew it was important to tell my story.  To tell other women what I had done.  God kept putting me in situations where I would be one on one with another woman, and I would tell her what I had done.

At the time, I was still afraid of letting God in.  I would tell these broken, hurting women my story and tell them that I just wasn't sure how to let God in.  Wasn't sure if there was any hope left for me, where God was concerned.  But I was still sharing my story, opening up, sometimes to people I had never met before or barely knew.  It's like there was something in me that knew it was important to share my story.  And I couldn't believe how many women were placed right in front of me.

And now, AFTER Good Friday, it's even more apparent to me that there are a LOT of broken, hurting women that aren't sure that God can truly love them (OR FORGIVE THEM!).  That believe in God.  That go to church and sing the songs, read the main verses.  But they don't really understand the Cross.  Like the old me.  They are carrying around this heavy burden of guilt and shame.  And God wants to use my story to help them.  I wish just sharing my story was enough.  I wish that women could read what I am writing and magically just know.  Magically just understand.  I do believe that God can work through this writing and that the majority of the time, His hand is in this.  But there isn't always an easy fix.  The answer isn't always just in these words on the internet.

So my heart is heavy.  For a few women in my life who so desperately need to understand how big God's love is for them.  And for all the other women out there, that I haven't met yet. That need to hear my story, and stories like mine.  Stories of extreme brokenness, and healing, and redemption.

I was talking with a friend tonight about anxiety and how sometimes she might feel anxious before sharing her story with others.  I was marveling at the difference.  I have no anxiety before sharing my story with other women one on one, because I don't think about who I am going to tell my story to.  It seems that God just keeps putting me in these positions where the story just comes out.  It isn't premeditated.  It just happens.  And I am grateful for these opportunities.  I really am.  But I just sit back, after the fact, and marvel at conversations I have had.  And I'm like "God, what the heck?"  Or "Where did THAT come from?"  But I just smile and thank God for using me.  And I pray.  I pray for these women.  I pray that they will understand the Cross.  Really understand.  Let their walls down and meet Jesus at the foot of the Cross.  Allow themselves to be vulnerable and honest with themselves.  To stop giving into Satan's lies.  To stop believing them.

Here's the truth.  Satan is lying to some of you.  He's whispering lies.  Like "You're not good enough."  Or "God could never love you.  Not after everything you've done."  Or "You have to keep punishing yourself for what you've done if no one else will."

But that's not what God is saying.

God is saying this:

"I love you."

"You're good enough."

"I took your punishment when I died on that Cross.  I did that for yes, even YOU."

"You are worthy."

"You are my beloved."

"You are not alone."

For all the "haters"

I was planning to write a nice, lovely post about our day at the St. Louis Zoo, seeing brand new Sea Lion Exhibit.  I was even going to show you some great pictures from our day.

But something else occurred today.

And you know, I just HAD to write about it.  My friend made this picture and posted it on my Facebook wall Tuesday, and it really is perfect for this post and my decision to blog about today's upcoming topic.  I asked-she doesn't mind that I share this here.  She owns this picture.  It does not belong to me (or you) so don't steal it without asking permission first, OK?

Perfect, right?

Let's begin.

Over the last two days, I have received SEVERAL anonymous comments on my book review for 50 Shades of Grey, a book that I did not (and will not) read; because I choose to keep my mind pure and free from temptation.  I think that some people did not understand my true intent of that blog post, or I wouldn't be getting some of the comments I am getting.  The majority of my friends and family know me, and if you've been reading, you know what has been going on in my life over these last few months.
You also know that pornography is a very sensitive topic for me.  My life has been altered and affected very deeply by pornography.  Beyond that, it is my belief that pornography is wrong.  This is MY belief.  You can choose to believe however you want, and argue with me as much as you want.  It won't change what I believe, and I have little doubt that I am not going to change the majority worldview on the topic.  Please reread that.  This is MY belief.  This is my husband's belief.  Our belief is based off of the Bible.  You cannot look at pornography without lusting.

*Disclaimer*
All quotes from comments I received are as I received them.  I just wanted to clarify that, as some of them may or may not be grammatically correct, or may have some misspelled/abbreviated words.  That's why they are in QUOTES. ;-)

I recently received this anonymous comment on my post "50 Shades of Trash":

"I know your prob gonna delete my comment cause im against to what you said. I do beleive in god and jesus. But this book has nothing to do with satan."

My first thought, and response was this:

"I'm not going to delete a comment just because someone disagrees with me. I did not directly say that this book has anything to do with Satan. To my Christian friends, I called it soft core pornography, which I believe is wrong. Some people, Christians included have their own reasons for why pornography is acceptable. My marriage was almost destroyed because of pornography and the hold it had in my husband's life, and Satan had his grips in me. Satan I believe USES things like books of this type to lure people away-entice them little by little, leaving them wanting more. I don't believe I ever stated that this book had something to do with Satan. Satan was mentioned in terms of pornography and the hold it can have in people's lives, and THAT is where I believe that Satan is very active."

Staying with that same thought, since I essentially said that pornography can destroy marriages, I received another anonymous comment that said this:

"Porn doesnt mess up marriages...people mess up marriages"

I agree, with the "people mess up marriages" part.  We are all fallen people and we all make mistakes.  We don't know how to communicate, or someone has an addiction, or we can't get along for whatever reason we may have.

People DO mess up marriages.  We get in our own way sometimes.

At the same time though, pornography DOES mess up marriages.

Yes, I am speaking from personal experience, but I also know of several others who have gone through this same thing.    And you can read story after story of other marriages, long or short relationships, that have been impacted negatively by pornography.  If you are currently married and you and your spouse mutually "enjoy" pornography, that's between the two of you and it's your marriage.  What I am saying is that the shift and the effect is so subtle sometimes that you don't even see it.  If you both agree that it is OK to read and/or view pornography, maybe it won't impact your marriage.  I did not ever say that pornography messes up EVERY single marriage.  If you and your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever have no qualms about sharing that with one another, you are free to do whatever you want.  This blog is MY blog, MY opinion.

And because it is my opinion and my blog, I'll go one step further to say that if you are a woman and you and your husband indulge in pornography, I would be quite shocked (and you might be too) if your husband or boyfriend isn't ALSO indulging in pornography on the side, WITHOUT you.  With pornography, there is ALWAYS a desire to see more.  Maybe it started out as just the two of you, but at some point it has (or will) become something secretive and personal for your husband, if they choose to continue in that.  Beyond that, pornography fills one's mind with images and ideas of what people SHOULD look like, and the reality is that most of us don't look like that! We will never measure up.

Let me take one more step forward, maybe step on some toes.  Women:  if you agree that it is OK for your husband to look at pornography on his own, not involving you at all, be honest with yourself.  Do you really think that you measure up to all those perfected, greased up women he is looking at on a computer screen or in a magazine?  How does that make you feel?  Be honest with yourself.  Take a good look and tell me that you feel like you are enough, even though your husband looks at pornography when you aren't around.  I'd like to meet someone who is able to look past the insecurities and hurt that the majority of us feel.  I am not being sarcastic.  If this is YOU, let me know.  Because in all the women I have talked to or read about, every single one has been deeply wounded by their husband's viewing of pornography.

Do you not realize that when you are together, there are times that he has to envision these other women that he has seen, in order to "seal the deal"?  Do you not see that if YOU are not the only woman "in the bed", you are not his sole focus?  Don't you want to be the sole focus of your husband?  Men, don't you want your wife to only think about YOU during sex?  How would you feel, men, if you knew your wife was only able to achieve an orgasm by thinking of another man (or woman)?  Does that leave you feeling like you are able to please her?

THIS is what pornography does in relationships, whether you share it mutually or one (or both) is hiding it from the other.  It takes what is supposed to be something sacred shared between the two of you, and invites a whole host of other people into your bed.

You can agree, or disagree.  It doesn't hurt me, or upset me when I receive negative comments like the ones I have gotten today.  What it does is break my heart, because I see so many people that are blind to the truth.  That are living in darkness and don't really understand how damaging pornography is in their own relationship.  I've said before that I have a heart for marriages.  Especially hurting and wounded and broken marriages.  And I believe that pornography is central to a LOT (I did not say ALL) of these broken marriages.

Another comment I received was this:

"What you are saying is ridiculous about the book...im against porn too. Fifty shades of grey is no where near porn...there is hardly any BDSM. Before you have opions on it...maybe you should read it. Its a very good book. Like the saying goes "never judge a book by its cover". Im married..and it made our sex life alot better!! Im not gonna run off and cheat on him. In the book..when they have sex...its two people in love having sex...they end up getting married and have two children. Read the books..thats the only way your gonna know what its exactly about. As for the BDSM...christian was into it because that was all he knew. The pedifile did that to him. He wasnt a pervert...he was abused sexually and mentally. Theres no cheating in it...no mpre the one sex partners... its two people falling in love and christian just has issues that ana helps him get thru..because he had a horrible childhood before he was adopted!!!!"

Here are a few of the areas I take issue with.

#1.  To say that a book filled with sex scene after sex scene, where a virgin falls for an older, more experienced man who was into BDSM, is nowhere near porn is just...how can I put this without sounding too harsh...unwise.  What does it have to have in it for you to think that it is pornography?  Pictures?  Rape?  What???  What makes it pornography?  A book that describes sex scenes is at the very least, soft-core pornography.  That is how I define pornography.  Anything that puts those images (of OTHER people) into our minds is pornography.  Surely you can't read that book and insert yourself as Ana and your spouse/boyfriend Christian!  Even if you could, having read Erotica before, I know that these types of scenes tend to cause a "stirring" inside.  Would you say that this book is NOT Erotica even?  Surely you can grant that it is Erotica, seeing as how that is the primary genre (aside from Fan Fiction) that it falls into.  So, maybe for you, Erotica is NOT pornography.  But they are one in the same for me.  I never wrote this post saying that my definition is supreme.  This blog, again, is my opinion.

#2.  You also said that "there is hardly any BDSM".  Which, to me, indicates its presence.  And as a friend of my wrote in response to this:
"Actually he was a pervert, by definition. A pervert is a person who acts on a perversion. Merriam Webster defines perversion as "an aberrant sexual practice or interest especially when habitual". Aberrant is "Departing from an accepted standard"... So thus BDSM is considered an non accepted standard by the majority of society... no matter what it stems from. Also, she states that if you choose to read this she does not judge you. It is your freedom and choice but she, and I, believe that it is not godly and not worth exposing ourselves to."

#3.  Several people have corrected my assumption that the description of the book (when it says "affair") is not accurate.  That neither person was involved with someone else.  OK.  I stand corrected.  Are we all clear on that now?

#4.  I am not here to judge anyone for what they do in their bedroom with their partner.  And I   never said that by reading these books (or indulging in pornography), you would go out and cheat on anyone.  Though I did state that in some cases, pornography can lead to extramarital affairs.  Additionally, when you incorporate pornography into your marriage/sexual relationship, your views of one another can become distorted.  And the sad thing is that you probably don't even realize it is happening.  That's how subtle it is.  That's how subtle Satan is.  He convinces you that just a little bit won't hurt.  Or, this is acceptable if it is between my husband and I.

I do want to defend my position a little though, in saying that while it may seem like your sex life is better, at some point it won't be enough.  There will always be this thirst for more, and at some point, your view on the topic of pornography may change.  Maybe it won't.  I'm not an expert and know nothing about your marriage.  I just know that whether you think pornography is negatively impacting your marriage or not, it very possibly is.  Note, I say "possibly" because I have no way of knowing for sure.  I hope and pray that I am wrong.  But I fear that I am not.

I also received this comment today:

"God gave you the right to make choices"

You are absolutely correct.  God gave all of us the right to make choices.  That does not mean that every choice we make is the RIGHT one.  Just something to keep in mind.

I received two similar anonymous comments, and I am unsure if they are from the same person, as they came hours apart.  The first one was listed at the beginning of the blog.  The second one was this:

"I am a christian and i do beleive in god"

I have never stated that anyone I know or don't know does or does not believe in God.  Can we agree on that?

So for the people who tell me that they are a Christian and believe in God, and that lust or
pornography is not wrong, then I have to ask you, "What about the Bible?"  Do you believe the Bible is true?  As a Christian?  As someone who believes in Jesus?  As someone who believes in God?  Do you also believe in the Bible as being the Word of that God you say you believe in?

If you do, then how can you discount this:.

Matthew 5:27-30

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

I was astounded by the negative feedback I received, but was surprised it didn't come sooner.  I know that my view on the topic and a book series I haven't even read rubs some people the wrong way.  I won't apologize for that.  You have your opinion and I have mine.  I am not a person who likes to debate.  I just write my thoughts down.  Some people agree.  Some people disagree.  I won't get into a shouting match because you don't agree with me.  I refuse to do it.  But I will defend myself ONCE and then leave it at that.  This blog post is my response, my defense, as it were.

And in case you think that this is just one WOMAN'S view on the topic, check out Manturity.  This is written by a MAN, about the horrible effects that pornography can have in a marriage, and in the life of an individual.  It isn't just women who take a hard stance against pornography.  Believe it or not, there are men out there who recognize and warn against its dangers as well.

So, who else disagrees with what I am saying?  Don't be afraid to let your voice be heard.  After all, I'm sharing my voice.  By allowing you to comment, I am giving you permission to share your thoughts.  I really do want to hear what you have to say, good or bad.  Sometimes it helps to "talk" through some of these tough issue.

10 Good Memories

I've said several times over the last few months that Kris is not the same man I married. I don't want to give the impression that we had a horrible life together before that. We had very rough times, but we had some good times as well. I still love that man I married. All the good things about him. The reasons I fell in love with him. For a long time (until about April of this year), I couldn't remember why I even fell in love with Kris. Now that my mind is no longer clouded by Satan's lies, I am starting to remember. So, I wanted to take a moment and share 10 memories about Kris, from our life "before".

#1. I can remember back before we were dating, when I first started to "like" Kris. You know, that butterflies-in-your-stomach-can't-wait-to-see-him feeling?  It was like that, only better!  We had been friends during the first semester of school.

Everybody liked Kris.

He's a pretty likable guy.

He's like his father in that way.

Everyone likes Kris' dad.

Something about both of them makes them likable. They exude kindness. In addition to that, Kris has always had a heart for God. Even the midst of his struggles and addiction, he has tried to seek God and overcome. Always. It's one of the reasons I fell in love with him. Listening to him read a paper in English class or talking to him one on one always brought me joy. He was intelligent and knew what he wanted. I always admired him.

#2. I will never forget how our first date came about. I had to sort of manipulate/coerce convince Kris to ask me out.  I can't remember exactly how it went down. I remember hinting out loud at the fact that I didn't have a date for Valentine's Day. He picked up on this (told you he was smart) and asked if I wanted to go out. Mission accomplished! I scored a date! I'll be interested to see what his memory is of how this date came about.  I can't remember if we were passing notes in class or talking.  And on this date, we exchanged cards.  I didn't want to rush into anything, so I got him a funny, "light" card.  His was very serious and implied that he was very interested in seeing where our relationship could lead.  I can remember, in that moment, realizing that Kris liked me back.  What a great feeling!

#3.  The week before Kris proposed, I knew he had asked my dad if he could marry me.  Very old-fashioned.  Very respectful.  I loved it.  The next weekend, he told me to dress up, and that we were going to go out.  I thought for sure this was *the* night!  We went to the restaurant where we had our first date.  He took me downtown and we went on a carriage ride and walked down by The Arch.  We had a really great date.  And yet, he still didn't propose.  I had an expectation and it didn't happen.  As we drove back to campus, I was very quiet.  When I'm mad, I'm a little sarcastic. When I'm furious, I can't speak.  I was FUMING!  And because I didn't know the St. Louis interstates at this point, when we got on I-170, I just KNEW we were going back to college.  I was seething. Poor Kris!  Well, to my surprise, we ended up at his mom's house.  Which wasn't that unusual.  We always went to his mom's.  So, we went inside and I noticed flowers on her table.  I remember thinking "I wonder where she got those flowers."  I never thought for a minute they were for me.  Remember, I was furious and convinced at this point that Kris was NOT going to propose.  I moved into the dining room to take a closer look at the flowers.  When I approached, I saw a piece of paper on the table.  And there was a hand-written note on the bottom, to me from Kris. [I'll share the poem at the end of this post.]

I realized that the flowers and the poem/note were for me.  But I still had convinced myself that Kris was not going to propose.  But all was forgiven when I saw the flowers and the note.  I went to hug him, to tell him thank you and about tripped over him.  It took me a moment to process what I saw.  Kris.  Down on one knee.  Ring in his hand.  Taking mine.  Asking "Will you marry me?"

We STILL laugh about how MAD I was that night.  It speaks volumes about Kris and his character; that he could take my anger and frustration in stride, be patient, and still ask me to marry him anyway!

#4.  He LOVES my cooking.  I know that sounds like it's more about me, and maybe in some ways it is.  But it has always meant a lot to me that he loves my cooking.  He is not a dessert person.  Give him meat and potatoes and he's a happy, happy man!  So, it was always surprising (and pleasing) to me when he loved my desserts too!  He'll still take steak any day over anything else though.  He made me feel good whenever he complimented my cooking, and told others how good it was.  He gave me confidence in that area, and I've always loved that about him.

#5.  I will never forget one of my first real self-conscious moments with Kris.  I was sitting on our bed.  I was upset.  I had put on 30 pounds in our first 6 months of marriage.  All that good cooking I was doing. ;-)  I was crying and really hating my body.  Kris came and stood in front of me.  He lifted my head and we had this conversation:

Kris:  You know I love you, right?

Me:  Yes.

Kris:  And you love me, right?

Me:  Yes.

Kris:  Then nothing else matters.

Sure...maybe he evaded the real issue, but he showed me in that moment that all that mattered was our love for each other.  How I looked, how much I weighed...none of that mattered.  As long as we loved each other, that would be enough.  In those early months of marriage, it was enough for me.  That moment, the exact words, will always stay with me.  It speaks of Kris' sweet nature and kindness.

#6.  I've tried a lot of different things.  Crocheting, quilting, BeautiControl, Pampered Chef, writing, making headbands and jewelry.  In each of these endeavors, Kris has cheered me on, supported me, and believed in me.  He has never said "I wish you wouldn't do that."  He has never shot me down.  He has never made me feel guilty for spending money we didn't have on hobbies I enjoyed.  He has constantly been by my side, encouraging me and making me believe that I can do whatever I set my mind to.

#7.  He is the best dad in the world!  Seriously.  I'm not just exaggerating.  I have never seen a more dedicated and loving father.  Kris has always been there.  When I have not, he has been the constant.  In some ways, at times, it was as if I were the absentee parent.  When I went through bouts of depression, Kris picked up the slack and acted as both mom and dad when I couldn't be. When I left home back in February, that was something I had to think about.  I really thought that if Kris and I didn't make it, the kids would be better off with Kris. Not just because I was so messed up on every level.  But because he was, and always would be, a GOOD dad.  Don't worry.  I'm not reverting back to that inward hatred of myself.  I'm just reflecting on a very dark time in my life.

#8.  He didn't bring me flowers often.  He didn't buy me jewelry.  He showed his love in other ways.  He would buy me my favorite tea or candy bar.  Or he would take me out.  And he would get me flowers, at times when I just really needed them.  He has always had a desire to make me happy.  He's a peacemaker, by nature and I saw that over and over again in our marriage.  Whether it was a little stuffed giraffe, or being the first to apologize, Kris has always been there trying to show me love, in his way.  And now that we are learning to speak one another's love language, it has just gotten better.

#9.  Kris is a hard-working and dedicated provider.  He works diligently to provide what our family needs.  He has a very strong work ethic.  Really, his work ethic is just part of who he is, because he is as (and has been) as dedicated to our marriage as he is to anything else he sets his mind to.  He is the most dedicated and hard-working person I have ever met.  This is an amazing quality to have.  I'm blessed to have such a devoted husband and father for my kids.

#10.  He has loved me.  Deeply and passionately.  In all of my depression and weaknesses, in all of my ugly, he has loved me.  He has stayed by my side.  He has forgiven.  He has shown mercy and grace and compassion.  He has shown me unconditional love, even when I couldn't see or feel it.  He has tried to live out love the way that Christ loves the Church, his Bride.

Ephesians 5:25-28

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.  In this same way, husbands ought  to love their wives as their own bodies.  He who loves his wife loves himself."

Thanks for loving me Kristopher, in all my phases, highs, and weakest moments.  I love you.  For a thousand years!  I looked back at this poem and put in bold and italics a part that I thought was so "prophetic" considering what we have been through.  I see now that you lived this out, in the good times and the bad.  In the light and in the dark.  Thank you.  You have my heart.

"i love you much (most beautiful darling)
more than anyone on the earth and i
like you better than everything in the sky
--sunlight and singing welcome your coming
although winter may be everywhere
with such a silence and such a darkness
no one can quite begin to guess
except my life)the true time of year--
and if what calls itself a world should have
the luck to hear such singing (or glimpse such
sunlight as will leap higher than high
through gayer than gayest someone's heart at your each
nearness) everyone would certainly (my
most beautiful darling) believe in nothing but love."

Stepping out of my comfort zone

If you are familiar with this blog, it may seem to you that I don't have any problems stepping out of my comfort zone.  What you may not know, because I seem so "open", is that sharing my story with you is totally outside of my "comfort zone".

It isn't easy or fun for me to admit The Ugly Truth.

I keep thinking about writing part 2 and I find that it's not time yet.  I keep waiting for God to lead me to write the next part, but the truth is He hasn't yet.  And I don't want to write it without His leading.  But I can guarantee you that when He does lead me to share the next part of my story with you, it will be completely outside of my comfort zone, even more so than He's already taken me.  Because the second half of the story gets a lot uglier, before redemption comes.  I've done a lot of stupid stuff in my life and sadly, part 1 was only the beginning of my downward spiral.  It isn't comfortable to admit that.

Nothing about being open and honest and vulnerable is comfortable.  But I'm learning it's not about me and my comfort level.  It's about what God is doing in my life and asking me to share, so that HE can work in other people's lives.

Another thing that is completely outside of my comfort zone is talking about pornography.  It is a topic that has deeply impacted my life and it isn't easy to admit the role it had in my marriage.  HOWEVER, if no one talks about it, it stays hidden.  And that empowers the enemy.  So, when I wrote about 50 Shades of Grey, it was not comfortable, as I wound up discussing the topic of pornography.

The majority of people just don't realize where it CAN lead.  It oftentimes goes beyond simply looking at images or movies or reading stories.  What serial killer have you heard of that hasn't been involved in pornography?  I'm sure they haven't all had that in their past, but a lot of them have.  I know that implying pornography leads to becoming a serial killer is an extreme declaration, but it is what CAN happen when someone becomes so desensitized to sex and what is natural.

At some point, just looking at another woman or man isn't enough.  For some, it can lead to extramarital affairs.  For others, women or men aren't enough and they begin looking at the same sex, or worse, children.  Sometimes even those in their own family.  This stuff is real!  Thank God that He ripped pornography out of our life and marriage before it got worse than it did.  Because I truly believe that pornography has serious and long-lasting consequences.  People rape and murder and a lot of the time, we find that pornography played a role in their childhood, early adolescence and teen years.  Because at some point, simply VIEWING it wasn't enough.

Lust is thirst.  Thirst for something more.  Something "better".  Something tangible.  It never leads to anything good, unless we're talking about within the confines of marriage.  It's OK to "want" your spouse and desire to be with them.  God designed us that way.  But anything outside of our marriages, where lust is concerned, is WRONG.  Debate me all day long, I will not change my view of that.  Because I have experienced firsthand how it can desensitize you.  And how it can impact your marriage and life.  Experience speaks far louder than just opinions.

So, there it is.  Those are "topics" that are outside of my comfort zone.  It may seem like it has been easy for me to share these things, but I assure you, I am not just comfortable being an "open book".  On the other hand, I think it is extremely important for me to share my story, and so I do, as God leads me.  And I know that I am not alone.  YOU may need to know that you are not alone. If we confront these issues head on and FIGHT for our marriages, we can save ourselves a lot of hardship.  We can defeat the enemy. We can steal his power!!

I don't know about you, but I like the idea of stealing from the enemy.  He isn't going to control my life any longer!  There is a very real spiritual battle going on all around us, and we have to take a stand.  We have to lift up our Sword and FIGHT back!!

2 Corinthians 10:3-5:  "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine powers to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ."

AHHH!!!!

Don't you just love it when you have very specific plans and then all of a sudden, you find out that those plans have changed, or worse just aren't going to happen?  I don't deal well with change.  At all.  Especially the little day to day things.  Like when I'm supposed to go somewhere and for one reason or another, I find out at the last minute that I can't go.  Or like tonight, when I was supposed to video chat with Kris (I'm in Indiana and he's home in Missouri).  But due to the time difference and his last minute change of schedule, he's now hanging out with a friend, which is great.  But it means that most likely my medicine will kick in and I'll be asleep before he even gets home.

Do any of you out there deal with these types of changes easily?  Am I the only crazy one?  I know that the answer is most likely a resounding yes but I just thought I'd ask.

For whatever reason, my heart and mind seem to process and deal with the bigger changes much easier.  If someone I love dies, while it is very sad, I am able to handle that without the same anxiety and disappointment.  Especially if they knew the Lord and are in a place where there is no more pain.  It's easier for me to cope with the bigger losses.  Of course, I haven't had to go through the loss of a child that was born (I did have one miscarriage) or the death of a spouse (so maybe in that scenario it would be much harder than these stupid little things that upset me).  And when my mind is really going, sometimes I wonder if God is gearing me up for something like that.  I know it is crazy nonsense, that I jump 25 steps ahead in how I think about things, instead of just taking it one moment at a time.   I can't help it.  I've always been this way.

Because this is how my mind works.  I think about everything Kris and I have gone through and I wonder "What's next?"  What kind of hurdle will be next?  Won't we, like the disciples, face trials in this life?  I can't honestly think that Kris and I have been through all we're going to go through. I can hope and pray that this is the worst we've been through where being lured into Satan's traps are concerned.  That the trials we will face will be of a different nature.

But when I am questioning things, like tonight because of this disappointment of not being able to talk to Kris, I start questioning everything.  And my paranoia sets in and I just start in one place, and then in my mind I find that I now have this scenario in my head that at some point in the future, I'm going to lose one of my children or my husband in some tragic accident of some sort.  Here's to hoping they aren't kidnapped or murdered, because that is where my head is trying to take me.  I am beginning to think that these outrageous thoughts are from Satan.  Surely they aren't from God!

I know that I am rambling.  It's this need to cope with what I am feeling right now.  Which is primarily disappointment.  And I can feel Satan trying to wrap his hands around me.  I can hear him trying to whisper "If Kris really loved you, he would go home now and talk to you."  And the reality is, Kris is having a really good night, talking with an old friend, sharing things that I am sure is long overdue.  And he has a rare opportunity to hang out with another guy and play a game.  I don't want to be that college aged girl anymore who would get upset with him for wanting to play a video game instead of spending time with me.

And I think another big part of it is this odd sensation that I have been feeling since BEFORE he went back home this morning.  I MISS HIM.  This is new to me.  I know it may sound crazy.  Some of you are thinking "Of course you do.  That's normal."  But, it wasn't always normal for me.  I miss him so much that it hurts.  I know that is a common expression, but it's a true one.  My heart aches to have him by my side.  I've taken for granted the closeness we have had and how much we have grown.  And how having him beside me makes me feel stronger.  I was crying last night in his arms, just thinking about him leaving.  Torn between wanting to stay here and spend time with my family, and just leaving with the kids and him at 6:30 this morning.  I was really having a difficult time with the thought of him leaving.  And now that it is night time and the house is quiet; and he isn't laying next to me, I feel sad.  I've grown so used to having him there and wanting him beside me that I don't know what to do now that he isn't here.  And I know it's a bit ridiculous, since he just left this morning (though I was barely conscious) and he'll be back tomorrow night.  But knowing that doesn't change how I feel.

Just now, he is chatting at me that he has changed his plans and is now headed home so we can talk.  So two things happen.  #1.  I feel intensely guilty that he had to leave his friend's house.  #2.  I have to cope with another minor change to my plans, even though I'm still getting the end result I originally wanted.

This is a peek inside this crazy brain of mine.  This is the kind of night I'm having.  And I recognize that most of it is the enemy.  Especially that tendency to feel guilty.  This is the first time I've felt that, since Good Friday, and it's over something I couldn't control.  I didn't ask him to leave his friend's house.  I tried to do quite the opposite because I wanted him to have that time.  But, the guilt comes because I feel like he left out of some obligation.  When in reality, I know (because he told me so) that he really wants to talk to me (which makes me happy and guilty at the same time).  So, this entire thing is ridiculous and this post itself is a pathetic rendering of the kind of nonsense that goes on inside me sometimes, but there you have it.

How do you deal with change?  I could sure use some tips!

Confession

When I woke up at 4am after less than 4 hours of sleep, I had no idea what the day would hold.  I had to leave early to go pick Katherine and Kaleb up from camp.  The camp was 2 1/2 hours away and my alarm wasn't set to go off until 5am.  I tried to go back to sleep but then I had a nightmare, and after almost elbowing Kris in the face when I jolted awake, I decided going back to sleep wasn't the best idea.  So I got up and got ready, then I laid down on the couch.

I got back home around noon, and as I was sitting on the couch, I got an email from my mother-in-law.  She told me that she really thought it would be best if my parents heard my whole story from me directly.  I thought about it and realized she was right.  I was so ready to move forward and I knew that God was ready for me to share my story, but I hadn't stopped to consider my parents.  So I took her wise advice and began the process of sharing with my parents what has been going on and about God's work in our life and our marriage.

I was very scared.  It's one thing to tell a complete stranger my story.  But someone that I know and love, and someone that loves me?  All kinds of questions go through your head.  What will they think?  Will they be disappointed in you?  Will they still love you?  Will this make your relationship stronger or worse?  I had so many fears flying through my head and heart.  I was incredibly anxious and couldn't breathe.  But I took that step forward that I had been trying to avoid for as long as possible.

I realized that none of those questions mattered.  I knew what I had to do and so I did it.  And really, they were just stall tactics from the enemy.  It is amazing to me, being able to see how the enemy is constantly at work.  I am so thankful that God has opened my eyes and is helping me to realize when my thoughts are not of Him.  Any thought that isn't of God, must come from the enemy.  Fear is from the enemy.  And it keeps us tied down.  It keeps us where we are.  It keeps us from moving forward.  And if the enemy can keep us stranded in fear, he is accomplishing his purpose.

I wasn't ready to tell my parents the ugly truth about my life.  But God knew that I was going to be able to do it, gave me the strength, and blessed me through their loving and forgiving response towards me and Kris.

And of course, I heard a new song today that I just HAVE to share with you.  I know that music isn't for everyone but it is a huge part of how God speaks to me and helps me through life.  I don't believe in coincidences, as I have said many times before.  I think that God gave me this song at just the right time.  It was shortly after I received the reply from my parents.  I was driving and feeling overwhelmed by God's goodness and grace in my life.  I was thankful that my fears were unfounded.  I was grateful to have parents that have been praying for me and my family, and that love us so much.  And then this song came on.  And God just reminded me that I no longer have to live as that person I used to be.  In fact, I am NOT that person.  I am NEW.  Check this out!  The lyrics are below. They speak for themselves.  Very powerful.

I Am New - Jason Gray

Now I won't deny
The worst you could say about me
But I'm not defined
By mistakes that I've made
Because God says of me

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

Who I thought I was
And who I thought I had to be
I had to give them both up
Cause neither were willing
To ever believe

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

Too long I have lived
In the shadows of shame
Believing that there was no way I could change
But the one who is making everything new
Doesn't see me the way that I do
He doesn't see me the way that I do

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I'm dearly loved
I am new

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
Dead to the old man, I'm coming alive
I am new

Forgiven
Beloved
Made in the image of the Giver of life
Righteous and Holy
Reborn and Remade
Accepted and Worthy
This is our new name

This is who we are now

Music That Moves Me - Week 9

I know I've posted this first song before, but it needs to be posted again.  Partly because it is one of the best songs out there right now.  Partly because tonight, I have an agenda.  It's debatable on whether or not this is Jamie's agenda or God's.  I really feel like it's God moving me, so we will see where this winds up!  I love writing that way.  Just writing and letting God guide me.  It reminds me of that verse in Proverbs 16:9; honestly this is how I approach writing.  "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps."  I have an idea or a plan that I want to write about and as I start to write, God starts shaping it into what He wants it to be.

He does the same thing when Kris preaches.  Kris will have his outline, but then when he gets up there to preach, as long as He is focused on God, God takes over and you can really hear God speaking THROUGH him.  I hope that is what happens through this blog.  Because it isn't supposed to be about Jamie.  It's supposed to be about God.  Tony mentioned tonight "Audience of One" and that's what I want this blog to be.  Do I want others to be touched and comforted and moved to action by this blog?  Sure.  But not because of me.  Because of God.  Ultimately, this is my journey with God and I will trust Him to do whatever He thinks is best.

All that to say, Thank GOD we don't have to hide scars!! His are covering OURS!  And be patient...there are some spelling/grammatical errors.  Look past them and hear what God wants to say to you.

I think that this song sets up perfectly the next song.  Though, you know me.  It will likely be a lengthy introduction to the song.  I met someone tonight.  A lady that from the start was dear to my heart.  I can't even explain it.  As soon as she walked in the door, I wanted to know her.  I wanted to connect with her.  And because I can't quite explain it, I'm convinced it was totally a God thing.  And I know, from the outcome a couple of hours later that it completely WAS a God thing.  And I am so extremely thrilled that God allowed me to be a part of it.

Some of you know that I made this bracelet recently.

I wear it most days.  A few people have commented on it and I've shared how "My Chains Are Gone" and my purpose for making the bracelet.  It's been so easy to talk to people about what God has been doing in my life and this bracelet has been a conversation starter on several different occasions.  For those not familiar with my reason for making this bracelet, I'll explain it.

The Cross represents what Jesus did for everyone.  And...even moreso, understanding and BELIEVING what He did FOR ME.  That I could finally, once and for all, lay my guilt and shame at the foot of the Cross.  I could finally be free from what had weighed me down so long.  I could trade my ashes in for beauty, and truly wear forgiveness like a crown.

The handcuffs that say "Freedom" symbolize, well, FREEDOM!  Freedom from sin. Freedom from guilt and shame.  Freedom from the hold Satan had in my life for so many years.  And the Swarovski crystal at the bottom, it is a reminder of the blood that Jesus shed for me, that purchased my freedom.

And my favorite?  The "hope" charm.  For so many years I lived in defeat.  I prayed so long for things to change.  I HOPED that my marriage would change.  That Kris would change.  That I could get out of the unhealthy relationship I was in.  And then, somewhere along the line, when God didn't answer my prayers, and Kris didn't overcome, and I found that I WANTED to stay in my bad relationship with someone that didn't belong to me, I gave up.  It was the last thing I had held on to.  Hope was all I had left.  And then, suddenly, it was gone.  I was a hopeless fool, living a life I hated.  Living without hope is debilitating.  Without hope, there is nothing left.  As long as there is a shred of hope left, we can still press on.  We can usually pick ourselves up and keep going.  But what do you do when all hope is gone?  When you've given up hope?  Sometimes I think that maybe the answer is different for everyone.

For me, God had to pull me up.  God had to grab me and move me.  Because I wasn't willing.  I wasn't ready.  I wanted to keep punishing myself.  I wanted to hold on to my guilt and shame, because I simply could not understand that my punishment had already been nailed to the Cross.  I felt like I deserved to be punished.  Since God wasn't doing it, and Kris wasn't doing it, I just knew that I had to.  I didn't have that hope anymore.  But God had other plans for me.  He really showed me how to have hope again.  Now everything is different.  I have hope and it is one of the most amazing things to have in my life again.

All of that to bring us to a song I heard tonight on the way home from Stories.  And I just knew that God wanted me to share this song.  It brought me a great deal of comfort.  And if this woman that I met tonight could really feel the truth in this song, it would be such a blessing.  My heart aches for this!  I can't describe it.

I want to share one more thing before I show you the song.  Tonight I was wearing the "My Chains Are Gone" bracelet.  There was a moment tonight when I heard God very clearly say "Take your bracelet off."  I obeyed, unclasping it from my wrist.  Then God said "When the time is right, give it to that woman."  As God orchestrates all things, we left at the same time.  So I was given an opportunity to give her my bracelet.  I explained to her why I had made it and what it meant to me.  My hands were shaking as I put the bracelet on her wrist.  I've NEVER done anything like this before.  I've talked to people about my bracelet.  And my story.  But this was the first time that I really felt like the bracelet was no longer mine.  I KNEW I had to share not just my story, but the reminder I have of my story.  And so I did.

It was such an amazing experience.  I had never met this woman before tonight.  But I know that God wanted this to happen.  It was no coincidence.  THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES.   And I hope and pray that I will meet her again.  I really love being a part of what God is doing here in my life and how He is using my story.

So...now that I've explained all of that, I'll share the song I know God orchestrated for me to hear tonight on the drive home.  It's called "You Can Have Me", by the Sidewalk Prophets.

And I wasn't originally planning to add this one, but I feel it is necessary.  For all of you who feel like you aren't strong enough, and that you can't do it alone; for you who are hurting and at the end of your rope, all hope gone, God can carry you to the Cross.  Will you let Him?  Surrender.  Surrender the temptation.  The pain,  The hurt.  The guilt and the shame.  Surrender yours fears and let God carry you to the Cross.  He doesn't always expect us to get up and get here on our own.  Sometimes, He carries us.  And I think He is OK with that.  The point is, we just have to get to the Cross.  One way or another!

Where are you at?  Can you pick yourself up and run to the foot of the Cross, or are you feeling hopeless and alone?  You are NOT alone.  If you literally cannot pick yourself up and get to the Cross, cry out to Jesus (another great song!).  God can carry you to the Cross.

Surrender.

Stop fighting.

Let God take you to the Cross, and you can lay your fear and your guilt and your shame down there.  He is big enough to take it all.  And to quote my favorite kids' cartoon Veggie Tales, "God made you special, and He loves you very much!"  Such a simple saying, and yet so profoundly true!!

The Ugly TRUTH - Part 1

***I want to make it clear before I post anything about my husband that he knows what I am writing and has given me permission to share part of his story.***

If you haven't read yesterday's post, I would recommend starting here, as this is a continuation of that post.  It sets the scene for what I am about to divulge to the blogging world and anyone who comes across this blog.

As I ended the last blog, I told you that seven years ago (really almost 8 now) I was one of those lofty people who couldn't understand how could ANY woman have an affair?

Men seem to have affairs all the time.

And we seem to accept that and are, for some reason, more easily able to forgive them.

But if a woman commits adultery, why do we judge her so much more harshly than we do men?

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I think it is because we can't see ourselves ever being in that situation, and so it seems so extreme.

But how DOES a woman get to that point?

To the place where she seeks love and attention from the arms of another man?

I can tell you this much.  Whether it is a man or a woman, it doesn't always just happen intentionally.  It's not as if I woke up one day and decided to find someone to commit adultery with.  I didn't see someone and make a choice to pursue that relationship.

I didn't understand that things like adultery are a "slow fade", as I wrote yesterday.  Before I experienced it myself, if I heard about someone who had committed adultery, male or female, it mostly made me feel sad.  And I would think "I'll never be one of 'those' people."  I would never be one of those women.  No matter how bad things got, no matter what happened between Kris and I, I could never in a million years foresee myself committing adultery.  One of the TOP TEN SINS (according to the Ten Commandments anyway...)

When Kris and I were dating, he admitted that he struggled with lust and pornography.  It wasn't something he EVER accepted as OK.  It wasn't something he was proud of and he tried very hard to overcome it.

We were young.

And naive.

We thought that getting married would solve all the problems he had with lust.

Oh how hopeful we were.

And how stupid.

We didn't see the trap Satan was setting for us, before we even got married.  Though we were in Bible college, and on fire for God at the time and very much "in love", we had NO IDEA what awaited us.

When I learned that Kris was still battling against lust and pornography, months into our marriage, I felt so many emotions.

Hurt.

Sad.

Angry.

Frustrated.

Rejected.

Kris would stumble and I would go through a gambit of emotions.  We would talk and pray.  I would comfort and forgive him and while it would take us a few days to get back to "normal", we eventually did.  I always took him back.

This began a vicious cycle that would eventually take a very deadly toll on our marriage.

The few girlfriends I shared my heart with would say "There is no way I could ever put up with that." or "Why don't you just leave him?  Why do you put up with it?"

Sometimes I think it is similar to a battered woman.  Sometimes we allow ourselves to "put up" with extremely hurtful things, because we are afraid that there is nothing else out there for us.  Those of us with low self-esteem feel like there is no one else in the world that will love us and take care of us.

We also take a loved one back time and time again, because we hope things will change.  We hope it will get better.  We hope that whatever addiction our loved one is battling they will overcome.  Especially when you're a Christian.

Beyond that, I WAS a Christian.  I grew up believing that in God, and Christ's death on the Cross, though I wouldn't learn for over a decade later the truth of the Cross.  I knew that divorce was wrong.  Biblically, it was wrong, except (according to what I knew) for marital unfaithfulness.  If lusting is the same as committing adultery, wouldn't it be safe to safe that I could legitimately have reason to divorce Kris?  Because while it wasn't physical adultery with another person, he did commit adultery.  Over and over again.

But more than that, before we got married, we promised one another that no matter how bad it got, divorce would never be an option.  I don't think we understood at the age of 19 how hard marriage was, or would be.  We never saw a time where things would get so bad that we would never want to be together.

For 12 years, I lived under the shadow of this promise I had made.  I couldn't divorce him, even though there were times I wanted out.  And we had four small children thrown in the mix.  "I could never survive on my own", I would think to myself.  And Kris is an amazing father.  I never consciously contemplated divorce until February 11, 2012.

During the first five years of our marriage, while we were still young and trying to live for God, in the midst of our struggles, my faith started to grow weak.  My hope began to die.  That vicious cycle we were in because of Kris' addiction to pornography took it's toll on me.  At some point, I quit caring.  About myself.  About Kris.  About our marriage.  I gave up emotionally.  I pulled away from Kris (and little by little, God) and built up a wall of protection around my heart.  I locked Kris out.

At the same time, Satan had big plans for how he could wreak havoc in our lives.  In the midst of our turmoil, Satan took that as an invitation into our lives.  And rather than fight him, we just rolled over and let him make a mess of things.  Yes, we were responsible for the choices we made, but there was a very real spiritual battle going on in our home and in our hearts.

And then, there was a man.

From church.

A very good friend.

Even back then, I never thought we'd be more than friends.  I liked him, sure.  He was nice to everyone and funny.  We connected on a very intimate, emotional level from the start, but I didn't "have feelings for him".

But he became increasingly nicer to me.  He started out by telling me how smart I was.  He began to compliment me here and there, always something different.  He would tell me I looked nice.  This continued and eventually we began to exchange texts and emails, all kept very light and casual.

Over time, as expected, our relationship began to grow and I was emotionally drawn to this man.  He was fulfilling that void that I'd been longing to have filled.  I wanted someone to think I was beautiful.  I wanted someone to look at me and think "Wow!  You're gorgeous!"

"She is yearning for shelter and affection that she never found at home.  She is searching for a hero to ride in, to ride in and save the day.  And in walks her Prince Charming.  And he knows just what to say.  Momentary lapse of reason and she gives herself away."  - "Does Anybody Hear Her, by Casting Crowns.

That is exactly what is was like for me.

Kris certainly wasn't saying those things to me.  Verbal affirmation has always been hard for him.  I always believed that a huge part of it was his addiction to pornography.  That because of all he had seen on that stupid internet, his view of me was distorted.  He couldn't really see me.  And I had always thought very poorly of myself to begin with; so having a husband who preferred to look at women with better, thinner, prettier bodies than my own left me with no self-esteem at all.

In the beginning I couldn't separate his addiction to pornography from his desire for me, his wife.  In my mind, he liked those women better.  He preferred to look at them alone and hide in the darkness with his sin than to be with me.

The reality is that he saw what he was doing as sin.  He knew it wasn't right.  And he made efforts to overcome.  Bible studies.  Men's groups.  Accountability partners.  He desperately wanted to be free from his addiction.  He knew that it made me feel horrible about myself.  He knew it made me feel unwanted.  None of it worked.

Occasionally Kris would tell me that he wanted me and that he thought I was beautiful, but only when I would point blank ask him why he didn't!  It used to make me so angry. He would finally say the words I wanted to hear, when I pointed out that he wasn't saying them.  I can still remember once trying to explain to him that everyone woman wants to feel like her husband thinks she is the most beautiful woman in the world.  Even though I know that I am not and that there are other women far skinnier and far more beautiful, I longed for someone to see me as the most beautiful person in the world.  Instead of understanding this, Kris went on this sort of diatribe about how there is beauty everywhere and different degrees of beauty.  He didn't get it and he certainly didn't make me feel like he thought I was the most beautiful woman in the world.  In fact, it was quite the opposite.  It was as if he was confirming my doubts-that to him, I WASN'T the most beautiful woman in the world.

So, as my relationship with this other man grew stronger, I learned how to hide.  I have always hated lying.  I told Kris that lying to me about the pornography was worse than the pornography itself.  I saw lying as vile and wouldn't tolerate it.  And yet, at some point, I became the liar.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever forget the night in July of 2004 that my emotional affair turned into a physical one.  It was never my intention.  I was content to just leave it like it was.  I loved how good this man made me feel about myself and how kind he was to me.  Another line from "Slow Fade" that really hits home with me is in the second verse.  It says "Be careful little ears what you hear.  When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near.  Be careful little lips what you say.  For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray."

While I would have been content to leave it at an emotional affair, even though I knew it was wrong, he wanted more.  And because I was so tied to him emotionally, little by little, I allowed more; because I didn't want to lose the emotional fulfillment that I received from him.

We became co-dependent.

Each filling a need that the other had.

It wasn't a healthy relationship, but it is where we found ourselves.

I can't tell you how many times I tried to end it.  I knew it was wrong and I knew we needed to end our relationship.  The times I worked up the courage to end it, he always had something sweet to say or a way to reason out why I should wait until tomorrow (which we all know never comes); and every time I gave in.  And I wouldn't end it.  Once in counseling, during this time, the counselor told me that if I didn't end the affair, it would kill me emotionally.

In the end, she was right.  I wouldn't learn just how right she was until much later.

In October of 2004 (just 3 months into this affair) Kris found a chat on my computer between me and this other man.  Kris called me (I was out at the time) and I could tell he was really upset.  I asked him what was wrong.  His exact words (I can still hear them) were "I think you know what."

I still played dumb, praying that he hadn't somehow found out.  He asked where I had been and who I had been meeting.  I just sat there, unable to respond, as I tried to process the truth that he really did know.  He told me to come home so we could talk.

I was driving home that night and had a very important decision to make.  I can vividly remember the fear I felt.  The horror.  What would he say?  What would he do?  Would he leave me?  What I had done was so much worse to me than his pornography addiction.  Because while they ultimately were the same thing, mine was with a real person and this seemed so much worse to me.  I was so scared.

My first instinct was to flee.  To run away.  To just keep driving and see what would happen.  But I felt like I owed it to him to go home and face what I had done.  I knew that I had to muster the courage to deal with the confrontation that would follow when I arrived at home.

It was late at night and all the kids were asleep.  We only had three at this time.  I sat on the couch and he sat across from me.  He asked me a few questions, all of which I answered honestly.  While I hadn't actually crossed that line of having intercourse with this other man, I had crossed lines.  I had sinned.  I had been physically involved with another man.

After hearing my answers to his questions, he reacted in the last possible way I expected.  He told me that he loved me and that what he had done to me over the last seven years was no different than my own sin.  He loved me unconditionally.  He loved me as God loved me.  I just couldn't understand it.  I knew in that moment that I was in the presence of God's divine love and grace.  I knew that Kris was showing me in a very real way how God loves us.

But I couldn't accept it.  I was so weighed down with guilt and shame over what I had done.  I was crushed because I had hurt my husband more deeply than he would admit.  But I knew him pretty well by now.  I knew that while he didn't speak to me in anger or throw the affair in my face as the months progressed, I had hurt him.  But because he is a loving, God-fearing man, he forgave me and continued to love me.

Things got better for a while.  He had wanted to know what this other guy gave me that he didn't.  And so I told him.  And so Kris tried to speak my love language.  He tried to use verbal affirmation to connect with me.  For a few weeks.  And then he just stopped.  I was still so overwhelmed with the guilt and shame, and I felt like I didn't deserve any kindness from him anyway, so I didn't say anything.  It came as no surprise to me that his "freedom" from his addiction didn't last long.  A few months, maybe.  It was devastating all over again, and yet, how could I be upset?  I had been with another man.  He just looked at images on a computer screen.  My sin was so much worse than his, wasn't it?

It was a very dark time in my life.  At the time, it was the lowest I had ever felt.  I was depressed and ashamed.  I couldn't accept God's or Kris' love for me.  Because it didn't make sense.  Not after what I had done.  Not after what I had become.

Our secret stayed fairly contained.  Not a lot of people knew about the affair.  The ones that did accepted me with love and forgiveness, but it still wasn't enough for me to really feel it and find healing.  I should have gone to counseling afterwards.  Kris and I went to a couple of counseling sessions in the beginning, but we wound up quitting for reasons I can't remember.   Maybe it was because we felt like our relationship was restored and things at home were going good.  I hid my deep sense of shame and worthlessness from Kris.  Life got back to a semi-normal state in the months that followed the aftermath.  We felt closer to each other and I could see Kris was trying to fill my emotional needs.

I got pregnant within a month of the affair ending and we had a miscarriage right before Christmas. I was about 10 weeks along.  Little more than two weeks had passed when I got pregnant with Olivia.  We were moving forward and life seemed good.  While I still bore the weight of the guilt and shame and called myself everything you can think of, outwardly I tried to be a good, Godly woman.  I read my Bible, prayed for Kris regularly that God would free him from his addiction, and tried to be the woman God wanted me to be.

But I was wounded.  And I never really healed and experienced God's grace and forgiveness.  I knew about it, cognitively.  But my mind and my heart were so disconnected from each other.  And it became something that I would wrestle with for the next seven years.
